Aim to have the length of your exhalations as long, if not longer, than your inhalations. By expelling more used air, you make more room for fresh air to fill your lungs. If your out-breaths are much shorter than the in-breaths, you can help to expel more air by gently contracting your abdominal muscles.

I came across a phrase lately–zuo wang, Chinese for “sitting forgetting.” I loved the concept. In my younger days, when my body allowed it, jogging, a rhythm of breathing, and me left with my thoughts …alone….on the road helped me become a better decision maker. I felt more balanced. I could easily put myself in the shoes of others. I was more calm as I faced every day. At the time, I could not tell you why this happened. But, today, many years later I seek out that balance through art, music, fishing etc.

When I am conscious the entire night I will remember the full 8 hours the next morning, but the memories quickly fade like dreams fade. I believe this has something to do with the way memories are formed while in dream-states. But I do remember them at the time, and that’s how I know I wasn’t just coming in and out of sleep the whole night… I am literally conscious the entire night!

When I hold this thought in my mind I don’t have other thoughts. It’s almost as if the thoughts that do arrive at my consciousness are passers by, and I can just choose to not pay attention to them. I see that they visit me, but no attention is given to them. This mental state continues for the entire night. I’ve personally found that meditation creates new ways of being in the world. For instance…I no longer react to silly things that might have bothered me in the past. It’s an interesting sensation to simply feel ‘it is what it is’ and feel nothing in particular

Essentially, the science “proves” what we know to be true from the actual experience of meditating. Your matress beneath you seems to slip away and feels as if you are laying on air. Your body becomes lazy and limp at this comforting and relaxed feeling. The hug of the blanket is warm, positive and reassuring.

Over the last several decades, many have become fascinated with researching physiological correlates of the meditative state—studying Tibetan monks, Indian yogis and trained Western meditators as their subjects. One thing that has become obvious: different meditation techniques do not produce the same levels of relaxation, change in breath rate, brain patterns, or benefits for mind and body. In my younger days, when my body allowed it, jogging, a rhythm of breathing, and me left with my thoughts …alone….on the road helped me become a better decision maker. I felt more balanced. I could easily put myself in the shoes of others. I was more calm as I faced every day. At the time, I could not tell you why this happened. But, today, many years later I seek out that balance through art, music, fishing etc.

The first time I ever took part in meditation it was not mindfulness based meditation as much as chi gong/tai chi meditation. It made me feel dissociated and confused, I began to disconnect from my body. It has been shown in studies that our brains will connect us with our bodies to reduce dissociation if we partake in MINDFULNESS meditation rather then imagery based meditation. Mindfulness meditation focuses on the reality of the present moment rather then imagining something that is not quite there. In yoga meditation your often meditate on something you wish to embody, such as a lotus. Although this is likely great for someone with depression or a jaded life view, I would assume it would not improve self control and help an individual come to realizations. Meditation is as simple as following your breath in and out, and if your brain begins to float away from you come right back to following your breath. This process can actually train your brain and change the way it functions to increase attention and lead to more careful decisions. I’ve found meditation to be a wonderful tool to help me release aches and pains that can seemingly appear out of nowhere. I’ve learned that these physical discomforts are simply my body trying to communicate emotions and other issues trapped in my body. By meditating on the issue, investigating it with objective curiosity (and without judgment), asking what message it has for me and being open to whatever arises, I can “magically” cure whatever ails me.

Drying of mouth, Sympathetic system alters the secretion from the salivary gland which ordinarily keeps the mouth moist. Change in the movements of the stomach and intestine occurs. It is seen in the X-ray pictures that the contraction of the stomach and intestines are stopped or reversed in strong emotions.

This is so weird. I have been watching your talks on youtube and thought to myself in the last 10 minutes that I need to look up meditation for beginners, but then checked out your site first and this was the first thing I saw. Funny how that happens. 🙂

Some might find that it’s easy to jump back into meditation practice. For others, it can be a challenge. Instead of practicing meditation daily, they might only return to it during times of extreme stress or crisis. Crisis meditation, as it’s called, provides little benefits. It simply won’t give you the return on your time investment in the long term.

Truth:  This may be the number one myth about meditation and is the cause of many people giving up in frustration. Meditation isn’t about stopping our thoughts or trying to empty our mind – both of these approaches only create stress and more noisy internal chatter. We can’t stop or control our thoughts, but we can decide how much attention to give them. Although we can’t impose quiet on our mind, through meditation we can find the quiet that already exists in the space between our thoughts. Sometimes referred to as “the gap,” this space between thoughts is pure consciousness, pure silence, and pure peace.

Chopra learned to meditate 35 years ago in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “I was lucky enough to have Maharishi Yogi as my direct teacher. He was the teacher for the world at the time, including the Beatles” he said.

Metta meditation, also known as Loving-Kindness meditation, is designed to cultivate four qualities of love: friendliness (Metta), compassion (Karuna), appreciative joy (Mudita), and equanimity (Upekkha). The quality of Metta, or friendliness, is expressed as a genuine compassion sent out with the intention of surrounding ourselves and others with loving kindness. With all that is going on in the world today, Metta meditation is a worthwhile practice for each of us to spend some time in each day. This style of meditation also works well as an entrance point for the practice of forgiveness and can be a powerful tool for lessening the charge of negative emotions we have toward those who have wronged us.

The consumption of oxygen by the body decreases. The resistance of the skin to the passage of a weak electric current rises (a sign of relaxation) and the blood flow in the interior of the body like intestine, stomach increases. The level of lactic acid in the blood drops significantly. Since lactic acid in the blood tied to anxiety. It is low during meditation. These were measured physiologically during transcendental meditation. (Wallace and Benson 1972)

Binaural Beats — Binaural beats were originally discovered in 1839 by physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove. He discovered when signals of two different frequencies are presented separately, one to each ear, your brain detects the phase variation between the frequencies and tries to reconcile that difference. This is used to generate alpha waves (10 Hz), which is the brain wave associated with initial levels of meditation. There is scientific research into why and how binaural beats work.

Have patience and do your practice systematically. Every action has a reaction. It is not possible for you to meditate and not receive benefits. You may not notice those benefits now, but slowly and gradually you are storing the samskaras (impressions) in the unconscious mind that will help you later. I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or if I’m blocked or what. I’ve been trying out meditation for about a month now and it’s been an interesting experience. In my younger days, when my body allowed it, jogging, a rhythm of breathing, and me left with my thoughts …alone….on the road helped me become a better decision maker. I felt more balanced. I could easily put myself in the shoes of others. I was more calm as I faced every day. At the time, I could not tell you why this happened. But, today, many years later I seek out that balance through art, music, fishing etc.

Wauw, I tried the breath Sync. First time I had 67 after this I did the joy meditation of Wanderlust and the Love & Kindness meditation. Then I did the Breath Sync again and it was 102!!! wauw this is working. And only a half hour difference in time. I going to continue with this, its GREAT!

When we meditate, we use an object of attention, such as our breath, an image, or a mantra, which allows our mind to relax into this silent stream of awareness. When thoughts arise, as they inevitably will, we don’t need to judge them or try to push them away. Instead, we gently return our attention to our object of attention. Meditation is a 15,000 year old practice. Modern research finds alpha can be quickly and easily stimulated using AlphaStim or similar systems. Binaural beats can stimulate theta and delta. These can be used while watching TV or reading, etc.

Although research into this concept had been performed since at least the 1800s, the terms “emotional quotient” and “emotional intelligence” did not become popular until the 1980s, when psychologists Peter Salovey of Yale and John Mayer of the University of New Hampshire began conducting research into it. The concept was further popularized by Daniel Goleman, another well-respected psychologist who wrote many books on the subject and has served as co-chair of The Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations. Although these and many other psychology experts view emotional intelligence measurements as scientifically valuable studies of social behavior and relationships, the science behind these measurements are often questioned.

As you relax more and more, any outside sounds fade off into the distance. As you become more calm and embrace sleep, your eyes drift ever more into the distance, beckoning your eyelids to close softly. The dreamcatcher observes you from your head to toe, peeling any thoughts and feelings away in through the next and sending down sleepy dreamy sensations to your mind and body through the sincere feathers above. You feel safe, sleepy and relaxed. As your mind settles down, your body rests itselfs into position, ready for sleep. As the dreamcatcher creates a soothing atmosphere around you, it’s feathers send their softness to you. Your pillow becomes softer and seems to deflate into an air pocket of surrender for you head and neck, loosening all the muscles around your shoulder area. Your matress beneath you seems to slip away and feels as if you are laying on air. Your body becomes lazy and limp at this comforting and relaxed feeling. The hug of the blanket is warm, positive and reassuring.

Lastly, meditation shouldn’t be seen as a replacement for conventional medical therapy. If you suspect that you’ve depression, seek proper medical advice first instead of trying to fix it on your own by learning how to meditate from a book or CD.

Meditation could help to improve concentration, but it’s not a quick fix. You can’t meditate today and expect to see a boost in focus level at the end of the week. The gain would most likely be too subtle to make a discernible difference. Generally, you’ll need at least a month or more, assuming a daily practice. How fast you see results really depends on several factors, such as how often you practice, the quality of each session and your current level of focus. Having said that, it’s possible to observe a quicker transformation in terms of stress level with meditation. Just a session of meditation is often enough to bring stress level down, even if you’ve wandered many times during your meditation. I guess what I’m trying to say is: be patient, put your worries aside and meditate with one mind each day, without fail. If you do just that, you’ll surely see the results you want one day. How do you get out of that state?  Alert yourself, straighten your back, breathe the stale air out of our lungs, and direct your awareness into the clear space to freshen your mind.  If you remain in this stagnant state, you will not evolve, so whenever this setback arises, clear it again and again.  It is important to be as watchful as possible, and to stay as vigilant as you can.

I often feel very lightheaded and dizzy for no medical reason, have done since by teens and now 30. Kinda out of body-ish, but not in a nice sort of way. What kundalini kryia would you recommend or anything else that you think would help. Thanks x

Do that for two minutes and now move your awareness anywhere in your body that you want to bring healing to. You don’t have to visualize anything, you don’t have to say anything, just bring your awareness. Just bringing awareness to these different parts of your body will bring consciousness, which is healing.

Transcendental meditation is defined as a technique for detaching oneself from anxiety and promoting harmony and self-realization by meditation, by using a mantra, and other yogic practices. The technique is a specific form of mantra meditation developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. This is practiced for 15–20 minutes twice per day. First by closing your eyes, wait a few seconds, and then start thinking the mantra. After a while you should “let it go” and allow thoughts to come and go along with the mantra. When the mantra disappears and the mind goes off on thoughts we quietly come back to it. Om or aum is the most basic and powerful mantra you can chant. This will create positive vibrations in your lower abdomen. It is often combined with the mantra “Shanti,” which means peace in Sanskrit.

In addition, the brain’s default mode network is activated, which is sort of an idling, resting state of the brain. Alpha brain waves predominate, an indication of relaxation. In addition, research shows there’s greater coherence in one’s brain waves, which has been interpreted to mean the brain is functioning in a more coherent, effective fashion.

I loved this book! It was an absolutely fantastic guide to Meditation. It teaches you how to properly meditate and even how to prep yourself to be in the right frame of mind so you can reap all the benefits it has to offer. I learned a lot from it and am happy that I downloaded it. I could never concentrate on meditation before and after ready this I finally realized why I couldn’t clear my mind and really focus. I’m Deepak Chopra and I’m going to do three things with you. First, I’m going to explain what meditation is and how it works. Secondly, I’m going to do a healing meditation with you. Thirdly, I’m going to do something really exciting — the law of attraction and meditation. So let’s start with the theory first:

This is actually the true purpose behind all kinds of meditation, and not a meditation type in itself. All traditional techniques of meditation recognize that the object of focus, and even the process of monitoring, is just a means to train the mind, so that effortless inner silence and deeper states of consciousness can be discovered. Eventually both the object of focus and the process itself is left behind, and there is only left the true self of the practitioner, as “pure presence”.

I’d suggest you do footsoaking = soaking your feet into salt water (any salt will do) for about 15 mins everyday. Try also luke warm water to start with and see what work best, if you need colder put colder water if you need warmer water, do so. This is a treatment we all do everyday, sometimes 2 to 3 times a day.

If the time you save not sleeping is spent in a mindful state, how will that impact your day? Perhaps some of the other benefits of a meditation practice—better health, wellbeing, and quality of life—will be better achieved in those new wakeful moments

However, in mindfulness meditation, you want to achieve a delicate balance of alertness and relaxation.  If you’re too tight, it will be difficult to experience a spacious state of mind, which is essential in meditation.  If you’re too loose, you’ll space out or fall asleep.

At first I wasn’t sure when to use the Meditation into Expand Intuitive Knowledge, because I’m used to using meditation to seek peace, inner growth, or guidance, not so much to celebrate and expand a good energy already present. Then I was out hiking in the woods the other day(I live in Alaska) and I just knew that the energy of the trees and sunlight and wind are for me the spiritual beauty I want to expand within myself and others, so I sang this beautiful mantra. Now I love adding the mantra to my outdoor time…and the singing has another nice benefit…it helps wildlife I do not want to take by surprise, like bears, know I’m around in a loving, peaceful way.
