If you find yourself tensing up in meditation, take a moment to consciously relax.  Bring your mind home to your body, take a few breaths, and let your muscles soften.  Do this as often as you need to and you’ll find yourself more relaxed as you practice.

Hi Gabby, I feel like I was called to you. I was in a very bad crossroads in my life, everything came crashing down on me all at once. It’s so hard to see the light when you are engulfed in darkness. I was flipping through the tv last weekend and came across super soul sunday with you appearing. I was immediately drawn to you and before the episode was over I purchased Miracles Now & May cause miracles. I also watched your 3 hour Manifest Miracles now workshop. Mind blowing!! It’s exactly what I needed at just the right time. I did the meditations you taught in the workshop & I feel so much more calm and relaxed. Knowing that everything will be ok. One of my huge stressors is my job, I did the kundalini meditation you warned about yesterday and today I just felt a pull to leave my job now. I gave my notice and I feel so calm, I know it’s the right thing for my soul, it was a major block in my life. Also, something out of the blue, something that cannot explained, within a couple hours of leaving, I was given a sign from the divine letting me know that everything will indeed be ok and trust in their guidance. I can’t thank you enough! I hope I will get a chance to attend one of your workshops in person someday!

This author, once in the high-stress world of fashion, found meditation and fell hard. She’s essentially pushing “McMeditation” (sort of), putting inner peace into the hands of everyperson. Of course … Read full review

Something old is not necessarily good, but he point is that something that has been *beneficial*, ie. good, for countless people for centuries which is now backed up by modern, scientific evidence probably has a lot going for it.

So, what’s it like to meditate? Speaking personally, it’s a calming, welcome break I look forward to ideally twice a day, but one that requires a constant, gentle nudging away from intruding thoughts.

Do that for two minutes and now move your awareness anywhere in your body that you want to bring healing to. You don’t have to visualize anything, you don’t have to say anything, just bring your awareness. Just bringing awareness to these different parts of your body will bring consciousness, which is healing.

Working experience the key benefits of historic sacred mantra repetition as placed on chanting and meditation, enjoy the ecstasy and deep spiritual fulfilment of the ancient Bhakti Yoga exercise, learn Sanskrit and Gurbani from Sikhism (Kundalini) chants, their appropriate pronunciation and meanings.

It is a widely practiced form of meditation, with over 5 million practitioners worldwide, and there is a lot of scientific research, many sponsored by the organization, demonstrating the benefits of the practice. There are over 600 scientific papers, many of them peer-reviewed, and I have used part of their research when composing my benefits of meditation page. However, there are also critics of the Maharishi and his organization, and some accusation of cultish behavior and doubtful research practices.

As the wise Buddhist teacher and author, Pema Chodron, writes in How to Meditate: “You don’t need to struggle not to have thoughts because that’s impossible.” I define mindfulness as the ability to pay attention to what is right here, right now—without getting hooked on any certain idea, belief, opinion, feeling or memory. It is a practice of watching the way we think without identifying ourselves as our thoughts.

effectively expands the range of one’s consciousness—the subconscious gradually becomes conscious through regular practice—one comes to intimately know the fullness of one’s own Self; this directly counteracts feelings of emptiness, a condition seen so prevalent in our society

PSM may be the most “difficult” for a new practitioner because it requires you to obtain the vibrational sound the universe was creating at the time and place of your birth. It’s calculated following Vedic mathematic formulas and is very personal and specific to you. Founded by Dr. Deepak Chopra and Dr. David Simon, this meditation is focused on comfort and helping enter deeper levels of awareness by taking you away from the intellectual side of the brain.

This is so weird. I have been watching your talks on youtube and thought to myself in the last 10 minutes that I need to look up meditation for beginners, but then checked out your site first and this was the first thing I saw. Funny how that happens. 🙂

Deepak Chopra Meditation – Chopra is metaphorically described that the AIDS virus will send a “sound, which attracts DNA destruction”. The condition can be treated, according to Chopra, in which “the primordial sound of Ayurveda”. professor of medicine Lawrence Schneiderman said that ethical questions arise when alternative medicine is not based on empirical evidence and that “to put it mildly, Dr. Chopra offers a program to treat and prevent AIDS is empirical data in support.”

Traditionally, focused awareness meditation is called “meditation with seed.” That means that you are focusing your mind on something like a mantra (think TM), your body sensations (Vipassana), or maybe you’re just counting your breath.

Sri Chinmoy felt that outer running definitely helped our inner running (i.e. meditation) by keeping the body fit and calming the emotions.Every Saturday at 8 am, we hold an informal 2 mile race – Sri Chinmoy called them ‘Self-Transcendence Races’, because the main goal is to get joy be bettering your own capacity. The race starts and finishes at the Sri Chinmoy Peace Garden, 2520 Adams Avenue between Arizona and Hamilton, 92116.

We live in a hectic world. The stresses of work, the hassles of relationships, the strains of families, the uncertainties of the future and the regrets of the past are just energy draining to say the least. But what options do we have other than just live with it? Well, even before we can figure out how to deal with that, do you know that our minds are just constantly thinking about so many things such that it becomes almost impossible to even notice the simple things that happen every single moment because we are busy worrying about the future, regretting the past and judging the present. Besides, if you are never in the present, you will probably not hear the instructions that your boss is giving you, the ideas that your spouse is giving you, the concerns that your child is raising and the feedback that your employee is giving you. This simply means that you lack focus and are likely to be unproductive and have to deal with conflicts with people around you because you don’t seem to care about what it is they are saying. This can actually lead to a lot of dissatisfaction and unhappiness no matter how favorable our situation actually seems to be. And when we are in this constant state of worry and unhappiness, our bodies produce stress hormones that wreck havoc in our bodies in that they could cause many stress related complications like hypertension, chronic stress, depression, adrenal fatigue and lots of other complications that relate to stress.

“My typical coping strategy–the bourbon and cheeseburger method–wasn’t working,” he says. He attended one of Meng’s classes and soon started his own practice, one that helped him better handle his father’s eventual passing away.

Guided Meditation is like cooking with a recipe. It’s a good way to start, and you can eat the food you make like this. But once you understand the main principles and flavors, you can cook your own dish. It will have a different, unique taste; it will be tailored for you, and more powerful. And then you will not want to use the recipe anymore – unless if you are trying a dish of another cuisine. 😉

Many Many thanks.

If you live near a meditation center, you can try their introduction to mindfulness program. It’s usually a 6-week course at most places that gives you an overview of how to meditate. I recommend insight-oriented/Vipassana if possible, but any form of meditation will be beneficial. Yoga can be great too if you are able to clear your mind and focus on your postures (and not let your mind run wild throughout your practice – challenging to do unless you’ve practiced mindfulness meditation in some form).

Not that I haven’t pondered matters of faith. Several years into adult life, I spent some time exploring different religions. I particularly liked the Baha’i faith, which emphasizes “the spiritual unity of all mankind.” Baha’i views all religious figures, from Moses and Muhammad to Buddha and Jesus, as “messengers” heralding our evolution to eventual world peace. I loved the conceptual framework, but certain fasting and abstinence requirements sent me packing. Ultimately, I claimed Nature as my true religion, forest and shore as my sacred ground (something I still believe), while joking of my devotion to “the tree people.”

Adam teaches the breath of nectar which is like taking a sip of your breath. He also mentions focusing on the third eye which is the space between your eyebrows. I love this focus point because it helps to still the mind. I suggest watching this and then trying out the technique for a solid 3 minutes on your own after.

The modern non-duality movement (or neo-advaita), which is greatly inspired in his teachings – as well those of Nisargadatta Maharaj (1897~1981) and Papaji – strongly uses this technique and variations. Many contemporary teachers to employ this technique, the most famous ones being Mooji  (whom I’ve personally been with and recommend), Adyashanti, and Eckhart Tolle.

“Okay, you don’t. You don’t worry about that because trying to quiet a thought is a thought in itself. We think as long as we are alive. If you’re not thinking, you’re either comatose or dead, so you don’t try to get rid of thoughts,” Chopra said. “Meditation has two aspects to it: the inward stroke, where you go in the direction of your inner being, and the outward stroke, which is thought, and so you’re bobbing up and down.”

#4: It is a place where there is something called observer effect, or the power of intention, which means intention is very powerful when brought to this space and it orchestrates its own fulfillment –what people call the law of attraction — so those are wonderful qualities of your own spirit. And in the two meditations I’m going to teach you we’ll get into this space so we find ourselves infinite possibilities, infinite correlation, infinite creativity, infinite imagination, and infinite power of intention. That’s what meditation is really about.

You’re so welcome, Cathy. I’m glad you keyed in on that particular sentence. I think when we have a realistic sense of what it takes to learn meditation, it becomes easier to go through the natural ups and downs.

A sound bath is a surprising and delightful experience of a deep journey into sacred sound. You lie down and feel a refreshing bath of vibration, including planetary tuned gongs, crystal singing bowls and a wide variety of other ancient sound-healing instruments. Once the room is engulfed with this ancient cosmic vibration, everyone will take part in a journey they will not soon forget.

Reply Woman, nameless remarks constantly come from exactly the same area: people who find themselves ashamed of them selves. They can’t bully the whole world back again, so they switch to random horrible responses by using the online world to vent some childhood shame, some incident in a locker place or in a lunch table or at band camp. Sure, I do yoga, meditate, and pray. I look at Samantha Bee!

As a meditation junkie I’m a huge fan of Headspace. I love this app because it makes meditation very easy for folks who are new to the practice. The app contains easy tools to help you focus more, sleep better and experience more Zen. I recommend this app to anyone who’s new to meditation or just feeling stressed out.

The cognitive skills of thinking, perception and analysis, synthesis, and reasoning are intelligence quotient (IQ). Emotional quotient (EQ) is the ability to understand the feelings and needs of one-self and others, to display self-control and self-confidence and the skills to respond to others’ feelings and in appropriate ways. According to Danah Zohar, “…when stats talking about noble causes, one is in the realm of Spiritual Intelligence.”

When you first start your meditation practice, you may feel awkward or even uncomfortable. That’s totally normal! You don’t have to be an instant expert to benefit from meditation. You can expect thoughts to pop up throughout your meditation. Instead of getting frustrated, try to let them pass. We are human and this is just how our minds work! If you meditate with a mantra, gently return to it whenever you catch your mind wandering. In mindfulness meditation, teachers often say to detach from those thoughts by seeing them as clouds floating in and out of your mind. The more you practice meditation — even if it’s just for a minute or two each day — the better you’ll become. But it’s not a contest or a competition. Meditation is a practice.

Meditation is sometimes called a devotional exercise of or leading to contemplation. But actually is a practice in which an individual trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness either to realize some benefit or as an end in itself.

Elder C, Nidich S, Colbert R, Hagelin J, Grayshield L, Oviedo-Lim D, Nidich R, Rainforth M, Jones C, Gerace D. Reduced psychological distress in racial and ethnic minority students practicing the Transcendental Meditation Program. Journal of Instructional Psychology 2011 38(2):109-116

I’ve discovered that when I meditate, sometimes I am REALLY in the zone, and I get a tingly feeling throughout my body. Other times, nothing happens, and I feel as if I am just going through the motions to get through the meditation. Is this normal? And how do I improve my practice so I get more benefits from it each time rather than every once in a while?

Meditation, like yoga, is a practice whose benefits can sneak up on you over time. On a day-to-day basis, it’s hard to notice how the practice transforms you. Then, one day you reflect on how you used to be and realize how far you’ve come.

A study done by research scientists at UC Davis showed that meditation can lower the amount of cortisol in the body, otherwise known as the stress hormone. Less cortisol, less stress, more capacity for joy. And a separate study done at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine showed that meditation can provide a level of relief from symptoms of anxiety and depression similar to that of antidepressant drugs. But no prescription needed!

Truth:  Meditation is a practice that takes us beyond the noisy chatter of the mind into stillness and silence. It doesn’t require a specific spiritual belief, and many people of many different religions practice meditation without any conflict with their current religious beliefs. Some meditators have no particular religious beliefs or are atheist or agnostic. They meditate in order to experience inner quiet and the numerous physical and mental health benefits of the practice – including lowered blood pressure, stress reduction, and restful sleep. The original reason that I started meditating was to help myself stop smoking. Meditation helps us to enrich our lives. It enables us to enjoy whatever we do in our lives more fully and happily – whether that is playing sports, taking care of our children, or advancing in our career.

Now, feel gratitude — gratitude by thinking of all the things that you are thankful for — your ego will move out of the way. Remember, ego is ‘e.g.o.’ means ‘edging god out’ — so you get the ego out of the way by just thinking of all the things you’re grateful for.

Sympathetic nervous system seems to be more active (Sympathetic Dominance) during fear. Blood vessels serving the interior of the body contracts, while those serving the exterior muscles of the trunk and limbs tend to become larger. Sympathetic system diverts blood from digestive functions to muscular functions. Heart beats harder and faster, the blood pressure goes up, pulse rate quickened, Pupil becomes larger. Drying of mouth, Sympathetic system alters the secretion from the salivary gland which ordinarily keeps the mouth moist. Change in the movements of the stomach and intestine occurs. It is seen in the X-ray pictures that the contraction of the stomach and intestines are stopped or reversed in strong emotions.

Qigong (also spelled chi kung, or chi gung) is a Chinese word that means “life energy cultivation”, and is a body-mind exercise for health, meditation, and martial arts training. It typically involves slow body movement, inner focus, and regulated breathing. Traditionally it was practiced and taught in secrecy in the Chinese Buddhist, Taoist and Confucianist traditions. In the 20th century, Qigong movement has incorporated and popularized Daoist meditation, and “mainly employs concentrative exercises but also favors the circulation of energy in an inner-alchemical mode” (Kohn 2008a:120).

Let’s set the intention to begin your practice now. Affirm this statement out loud to yourself: I am open to meditation and I welcome a new practice into my life. This simple statement will give you all the energy and enthusiasm you need to continue reading this blog and beginning your practice. It’s very important to accept that anyone can meditate as long as they want to.

I’m hoping that I get to you with my question today — I’ve tried many times to talk with you or comment to you etc, but haven’t had luck yet! I haven’t had resources available to see you live or attend a workshop etc. Crossing fingers today! I have so many questions for you — I’ve followed you for a very long time and you have helped me so, so much and through very difficult times, though I’m still sitting within one as I write this.

Identify your desired outcome. For example, do you wish to feel more grounded and at peace in your mind and emotions? Or would you like to envision your physical body as being healthy, vibrant, and strong? Or are you longing to create art, write poetry, be in a new relationship, or travel abroad?

Hi I feel that I have a more advanced mind than my friends. For example I am far more curious than any one I have ever met also I for some reason tend to focus on my mistakes in the past even something tiny. I have always searched for something to help me heal both mental and physically. I have never tried meditation and I think it would help. Another reason is because I’m scared of my self I’m the strongest person (like weights) and I’m starting to lose self-control I remember a week ago I almost punched someones teeth out because he was the most annoying person in my class and he annoys me so much and all because he was touching me and if meditating can help me become closer to myself would it help me?!?

“Secularized mindfulness programs are like an industrial approach to meditation,” says Jesse Maceo Vega-Frey, a teacher at Vipassana Hawaii, a nonprofit Buddhist organization that offers weekly meditation as well as multi-day retreats on the Big Island. “They’ve turned it into a commodity and replaced its foundations of generosity and morality with promises of productivity and effectiveness—higher test scores, more effective soldiers, greater wealth, more power.”

Your sense of “I” (or “ego”) is the center of your universe. It is there, in some form or another, behind all your thoughts, emotions, memories, and perceptions. Yet we are not clear about what this “I” is – about who we truly are, in essence – and confuse it with our body, our mind, our roles, our labels. It’s the biggest mystery in our lives.

But if you apply the principle of meditation to experiences that come before you, you can fully attend to what is taking place. You can attend to your initial reaction without reacting to your reaction: “Oh, look how threatened I feel by that.” Let yourself be open to experiencing your reaction and it will move through you and allow other spontaneous responses to also come forward, so that you can select the one that is most helpful in that particular situation.

Others compare selling meditation to bottling water: it makes some people rich while commercializing an abundant resource. But arguably the biggest concern is whether these for-profit centers’ instructors can support the full range of emotional experiences that practitioners encounter. In some spiritual traditions, becoming a teacher can require more than a decade of serious study. Some of the new studios require as little as 100 hours of training.

From there, the way to get past excuses and delays is to not make when you meditate a decision based on your mood. Set a time every day, for example, 7:00 to 7:20 every morning, and 5:30 to 5:50 every evening. Use the same chair to meditate every time and make the practice automatic by sandwiching it in between two things that you have to do anyway, like showering and brushing your teeth in the morning and eating breakfast afterward. If you know that after showering you have to meditate before you eat breakfast, then you are not worried about the right mood and you just do it.

5. Too many thoughts?  At first, when you try to meditate, it will probably seem like you’re having many more thoughts than usual. That may not be the case. It’s more likely you’re just noticing the usual volume for the first time.

Maybe you will find a teacher and a single technique that resonates. If not, it’s okay to try a variety of techniques. The key is consistent, daily practice. It is helpful and recommended to seek out a meditation teacher or more experienced spiritual friend to guide you on your new path.

The simplest way to determine if you are meditating correctly is to ask yourself if you are meditating easily and effortlessly. Whether you are using a mantra or following your breath, your attention should be fluid and relaxed, not rigid or fixed. Remember, the mind needs to wander off, get distracted, and lose focus in order for the awareness to move from the surface level of the mind to the deeper, expansive realms of consciousness where we open up to our greater potential.

During the practice, whenever you drift away from the mantra to other thoughts, sounds, or physical sensations, you simply guide your attention back to the repetition of the mantra. Think of it as a dance back and forth between mantra and thought. Some mantras have a specific meaning and it’s said that by repeating the mantra, you are connecting to the energetic essence of its intention. Other mantras purposely have no meaning and are designed to help access deeper levels of silence. In this approach, eventually the mantra and thoughts will cancel one another out. When this happens, your conscious awareness transcends the busyness of the mind and reaches higher states of consciousness.

For many, it’s difficult to continue to meditate every day, even as major life events are happening. But this is precisely when you need to meditate. When we take the time sit in stillness and silence each day, we can more easily attain our goals, including improved health and wellness.

Johanna Sistek, a trademark lawyer, says the emotional skills she refined in the class help her focus on her many tasks, despite a fire hose of professional demands. Like most of her colleagues, she still faces “instant deadlines” but says they no longer freak her out.

Pet peeve – she quotes “average” people by stating their profession and age, which are always in high earning jobs and I don’t think one person is over 50. Well of course – who is she going to interact with that can’t afford to attend her studio.

Meditation practice often results in making us more calm and patient in our daily lives. However, being calm, quiet and patient are not prerequisites. Intense and difficult emotions are part of life and therefore part of meditation. We must sit with whatever we are experiencing… otherwise we’ll never sit!

Like many newcomers to meditation, you may be inclined to ask, “Seriously, I’m supposed to do this every day?” Ah, but you might want to. As with the body, exercising your mind is all about consistency, and results can be swift. Meditating for 25 minutes for three consecutive days was enough to alleviate at least some stress when test subjects were asked to perform demanding tasks in front of an intimidating audience for a Carnegie Mellon University study whose results were published earlier this year. To really feel the benefits, though, try to stick with daily meditation for at least 30 days. “Every day is ideal, but three times a week will do. Twenty minutes is better than ten, but if you’ve only got five, do five,” says Salzberg. “The every-day-ness of it is the most potent thing. You’ll see a difference.”

All meditations that silently use a mantra have a similar goal – to take our awareness beyond thought, into pure silence, pure awareness. The mantras used in Primordial Sound Meditation and the way in which we select them, is very different from other techniques. The mantra is based on the vibration the universe was making at the moment of your birth. Those who have developed a Primordial Sound Meditation practice cite the benefits of stress reduction, better sleep patterns, and greater peace of mind in their lives. We have also attempted to eliminate the secrecy surrounding many meditation programs.

Vipassana is an excellent meditation to help you ground yourself in your body, and understand how the processes of your mind work. It is a very popular style of meditation. You can find plenty of teachers, websites, and books about it, as well as 3~10 days retreats (donation based). The teaching of it is always free. There are no formalities or rituals attached to the practice.

Ok, so you know that meditation has dozens of benefits, and everybody is doing it. You look for information online or on a bookstore, and see that there are a LOT of different ways of doing meditation, dozens of meditation techniques, and some conflicting information. You wonder which way is best for you.

I teach Kundalini meditation. This type of meditation uses mantras, breath work, mudras (hand positions) and even physical movements. (All the meditations in my book Miracles Now are Kundalini practices.) But even before I became a student of Kundalini yoga and meditation I designed my own stillness practice based on different tools I’d learned throughout my life.

Breath-awareness meditation is a simple practice of finding a comfortable seat, closing your eyes, and placing your attention in the inhalation and exhalation of your breath. Breath awareness is an effective way to establish greater mind-body connection and to reduce stress. This type of meditation can be your preferred meditation practice each day and it is also highly useful during moments of tension in the workplace and at home.

Hi Gabby, when doing Kundalini meditations for between 6-11 minutes (or however long), would it be appropriate to also do another form of meditation the same morning? Because it seems to me like Kundalini meditations are partially goal-oriented, and I’d also like a stillness meditation. Also, can you do one kundalini meditation one day and another the next and so on?

Really be there. If your attention is somewhere else, thinking about your next appointment, errand or meal, of course you won’t find silence. To meditate, your intention must be clear and free of other obligations.

Hey, Awesome! You just meditated. Starting and ending your day with the Mindful Minute is a nice routine and encourages setting your intention in the morning and practicing gratitude in the evening.  The Mindful Minute is also helpful when you find your mind “spinning” into negative thought patterns.  Use it as often as you like, but be sure to practice it daily.

In meditation, we are in a state of restful alertness that is extremely refreshing for the body and mind. As people stick with their meditation ritual, they notice that they are able to accomplish more while doing less. Instead of struggling so hard to achieve goals, they spend more and more time “in the flow” – aligned with universal intelligence that orchestrates everything.

I came across a lately–zuo wang, Chinese for “sitting forgetting.” I loved the concept. The Chinese characters themselves are wonderful. 坐 shows two people sitting on the ground. 忘 shows the heart underneath while something above flees away. Lately I have been focusing using this as a reminder–when a thought enters, I just let it float away while my heart stays grounded. Or sometimes, if the thought is more persistent, I gently remind myself to “forget it.” That seems to loosen its hold.

i have been meditating for a long time now, and continuously for more than an hour since past month. I must say it calls me a lot and takes away the tensions. But i don’t FEEL god yet. I don’t feel the connection. Am i rushing? Or am i doing something wrong, maybe setting wrong intentions. Please help.

Hi Gabby I can’t thank you enough for this guide, I’ve been using it for a few weeks and it’s life changing. I’ve tried to meditate before but these clear instructions helped me break through. I don’t lose patience with my kids anymore! I highly recommend this guide to new parents. Are you still coming to the Vineyard? Xo Karen

I was very resistant towards meditation until I read this article of Christina Lopes… http://www.positivelypositive.com/2015/02/22/you-can-live-in-a-constant-state-of-love-heres-how/ Now I feel completely open to meditation and I am curious what effect meditation will have on me. Also there has been a curiosity towards mediation for a while now, so I figured, why not give it a try. I have been doing breath practices for the last couple of days, then I remembered you have a beginners guide to meditation. So I read the whole guide – thank you, very helpful!

The cost to arrive a day early is totally up to where you choose to stay, the type of room, etc. It is your responsibility to reserve the extra night(s) on your own, whether you come early or stay after the retreat.

According to Radhasoami Faith: “…strong desires, embedded in the mind, are awakened in Bhajan (a type of meditation-Surat Shabd Yoga) by the current of Shabd (sound)………all sort of thoughts will arise at the time of Abhyas, and the Abhyasi will not even be aware of them. His mind, instead of applying itself to Bhajan and Dhyan, will be swept away by all sorts of thoughts.

Brain waves in meditation also shift through various stages. The most common brain waves in meditation are alpha waves. These alpha brainwaves in meditation basically promote changes in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) that calm it. Regular contemplative practice of this type the roles of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems so that the normally dominant sympathetic nervous system takes a back seat to the normally secondary parasympathetic nervous system. Delta wave predominates during Yog Nidra.

Finally, come back to your heart, and in one minute or so say again those four words: Peace. Harmony. Laughter. Love. Remember those are the goals of all the other goals in our life, whatever we want, ultimately that’s what we want. So repeat: Peace. Harmony. Laughter. Love.

A picture caption in some editions last Sunday with the continuation of a cover article about the growing number of people practicing meditation in New York City misstated the surname of a class instructor shown at the Harlem branch of the New York Public Library. He is Benjamin Blythe, not Bythe.

Excellent question! I’m sure there are many articles on Psychology Today about this, but I generally recommend starting with the book Mindfulness in Plain English by Bhante Gunaratana. It’s an excellent intro book on mindfulness. Here’s the Amazon link:

I’ve meditated every day for the past decade. I owe my happiness, health and awesome life to this one simple tool! Through my meditation I have learned how to boost my immune system, release my fears and heighten my intuition. My daily meditation practice has given me an internal power that supports all that I bring forth in the world.

Meditation can open the door to the unconscious so healing can occur.  But you have to feel ready for this.  You definitely don’t want to traumatize or re-traumatize yourself.  If you’re a trauma survivor or live with mental illness, check with your therapist before exploring emotional wounds in meditation.

Whatever you think meditation is now, it’s not.  But you are where you need to be to get to the next step.  So don’t worry so much about whether you have it all right.  Just follow the instructions as best you can.  More will be revealed to you as you gain stability in your practice.

Hi. I know this may sound like a strange question, but I was wondering how to make sure nothing negative tries to get in when a person in meditating? I was watching a show the other day about a lady who meditated, and it ended up letting in a negative spirit. And, no, I’m not crazy, just curious. I tried to meditate years ago, and honestly at first it started out nice, but then as I went deeper into it, I felt like some kind of force was coming at me, and it scared the heck out of me. Do you ever get these kinds of questions? I have never tried to meditate since then because I am afraid to. I do want to try it again though because I have heard it can be such a calming and positive experience. Now, I do have a Christian religious backgroud, so I rely on God for protection, but still I am wary because I want to make sure I’m safe while I meditate. I hope you can help me figure out a way to relax enough to not worry. Thanks for your response. I appreciate the input. Can you recommend any good books for meditation too?

Also, I have meditated twice before, one time I attempted to but as hard as I tried I couldn’t clear my mind. I then tried it again while listening to music composed for the purpose of an accompaniment to Shiatsu. This helped, and I wasn’t sure how long to meditate for, so I set a timer for five minutes. During the meditation, I wanted to come out of meditation, but as soon as the timer went, I slowly opened my eyes and wanted to start meditating again! I felt much happier, less stressed and more healthy afterwards. I also felt a bit confused, as if I had been woken suddenly from a deep sleep. I tried meditating in this fashion again, although for slightly less time. I had the same feeling afterwards.

Sometimes I use the noise of a fan to help with that when needed. That steady hum/wind sound fills your mind and allows you to focus. I suppose you could do this every time you meditate if necessary. It’s sort of a mantra. Focusing on the sound and clearing your mind.

I know, you thought meditation was going to be about finding a calm, peaceful space where thoughts and emotions aren’t allowed.  Even if you could create that ideal space, it wouldn’t last very long.  I have a better option for you.

Metta meditation, also known as Loving-Kindness meditation, is designed to cultivate four qualities of love: friendliness (Metta), compassion (Karuna), appreciative joy (Mudita), and equanimity (Upekkha). The quality of Metta, or friendliness, is expressed as a genuine compassion sent out with the intention of surrounding ourselves and others with loving kindness. With all that is going on in the world today, Metta meditation is a worthwhile practice for each of us to spend some time in each day. This style of meditation also works well as an entrance point for the practice of forgiveness and can be a powerful tool for lessening the charge of negative emotions we have toward those who have wronged us.

Some meditation teachers insist that both the choice of word, and its correct pronunciation, is very important, due to the “vibration” associated to the sound and meaning, and that for this reason an initiation into it is essential. Others say that mantra itself is only a tool to focus the mind, and the chosen word is completely irrelevant.

2. Feel the air on your skin, smell the air around you, hear the birds around you, the noises. If your brain wanders to the to-do list and you realize you’re no longer meditating, begin again. “It’s almost like doing a bicep curl for your brain—every time you think, you redirect your brain,” says Yalof Schwartz. “And the more you do that, that’s actually how you change the structure of your brain.”

I’ve personally found that meditation creates new ways of being in the world. For instance…I no longer react to silly things that might have bothered me in the past. It’s an interesting sensation to simply feel ‘it is what it is’ and feel nothing in particular

Hi Kenzie, Thanks for dropping by! Interestingly, although meditation involves only a few simple steps, every person experiences it in his or her own unique ways. Yes, like you, I’ve heard of similar accounts which you’ve mentioned. I also know of some people who have these types of meditation experiences. While I can’t speak of those which you’ve heard, I can’t find any reason not to believe the accounts from those whom I’ve met personally. Their experiences were vivid and real, and some of them were relatively new to meditation.

Thanks for writing, John. Concentrating on your breaths is just one way to meditate. The breath is widely used because it costs nothing and is readily accessible when you want it. But the breath is by no means the only object you can use to focus during meditation. There are many other forms of meditation and I’ve written about some of them which you can find under Meditation Resources. I’ve also written about the commonly asked question: How do you know you’re meditating? which may also answer your question. Hope they are helpful to you. If not, feel free to write again. Take care.

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Accept that focus will be hard for you when you’re just starting out. Don’t berate yourself––all beginners experience the inner chatter. In fact, some would say that this continual return to the present moment is the “practice” of meditation. Furthermore, don’t expect your meditation practice to change your life overnight. Mindfulness takes time to exert its influence. Keep coming back to meditation every day for at least a few minutes, lengthening your sessions when possible.

I also examine just before I head over to bed (most evenings — continue to a work in development) but it helps set the phone down And that i really feel like I am in fact carrying out something smart although its the most up-to-date and finest Seaside examine.

Affirmations help to ground us in the moment, combat negative thinking and awaken us to our authentic selves. Often when we’re disconnected from our goals and ourselves these thoughts can spiral into a negative abyss.  Affirmations are a vital part of developing awareness and staying focused on our goals.  Use this formula to find an affirmation to combat negative thinking:

Examples of these are: Samatha (Buddhist meditation), some forms of Zazen, Loving Kindness Meditation, Chakra Meditation, Kundalini Meditation, Sound Meditation, Mantra Meditation, Pranayama, some forms of Qigong, and many others.

Here at Unplug, our mission is to bring happiness, calm, kindness, peace and connection to every meditator in the world; with the belief and understanding that “if you can breathe, you can meditate.” Here, you will connect to your personal mission. This Mindfulness-based Meditation begins with a simple, unique mantra technique, created by teacher Ben Decker, to immediately regulate your heartbeat, breathing, and body to a relaxed state. This class ends with a moment of self-appreciation and compassion – leaving plenty of room in between for silent meditation, deep relaxation and personal insight.

The most important aspect, as you see in the pictures, is keeping the back completely straight, from the pelvis to the neck. Mouth is kept close and eyes are kept lowered, with your gaze resting on the ground about two or three feet in front of you.

And it’s important to remember that mindfulness and meditation are two sides of the same coin. Another way to define mindfulness is meditation in action. You can bring the calm and focused attention you cultivate in meditation to everything you do—and that’s mindfulness. A strong meditation practice will imbue your attention and your actions with mindful presence.

I also have 2 children that are very young (they are definitely future little yogi’s!) and while I always try to meditate when they are in bed or being quiet, sometimes I just NEED to meditate for a few minutes while they are awake and running around. Do you have any advice for getting “in the zone” with lots of interruptions and distractions?

5. “Meditation is really important, but I’m not going to cross my legs and ‘ommm,’” says fashion designer Norma Kamali. “I get up in the morning, I’ve got a business to run, I have staff to pay. But I learned how to breathe. When I’m stressed out, I go to the bathroom, turn out the light, put the toilet seat down, and sit there, and slow breathe. As slow as I can until I almost don’t feel myself breathing, and I feel a wash come over me, and you sit for a minute. And then you go on with your day. It recalibrates you. Sometimes I’ll go to the bathroom three or four times in one day to breathe, and no one knows what I’m doing. But there is a point where I have to do that, and you can do it at any time or anywhere. Go where no one will bother you, ideally darker space, leave your phone at your desk.”

For example, as I type these words, the computer screen is my main object, but I can hear the birds cooing in the background.  I’m not so fixated on the screen that I’m oblivious to what’s going on around me.  That could be dangerous.  Instead, I’m abiding spaciously – relaxed with space in my mind for anything to appear and dissolve and cognizant of what’s happening while I rest my attention on my object.

Everyone thinks that the purpose of meditation is to handle stress, to tune out, to get away from it all. While that’s partially true, the real purpose of meditation is actually to tune in, not to get away from it all, to get in touch with it all. Not to just de-stress, but to find that peace within, the peace that spiritual traditions talk about that passes all understanding. So, meditation is a way to get in the space between your thoughts. You have a thought here, a thought here, and there’s little space between every thought

When you do this, your mind will wander. That’s natural. The practice of meditation is all about bringing your attention back to the one thing you’re focused on. If you sit in meditation for an hour, your attention might drift away into thoughts and daydreams more than 500 times.

Through periodic check-ins and TM group gatherings, Carol and Paul have kept me on track with my practice.

Proceed to try and do what makes you satisfied 🙂 Thanks for all you’ve accomplished! Despite all its popularity, today very few of us truly know what meditation is. Some regard meditation is the mental concentration on something, others consider that we meditate when we imagine something that gives us peace or satisfaction. All these methods are being with one goal to slow down and, eventually, completely stop the incessant activity of our minds. These exercises are not really meditation – they are substitutes for meditation because it is normally very difficult to stop our minds all-together. In reality, meditation is a state of thoughtless awareness. It is not an act of doing – it is a state of awareness. We either in this state or we are not, regardless of what we are doing in life. Truly, a man can be in meditation while doing his day’s labors as another man can be very far from meditation while sitting in a lotus posture on the top of a mountain. I never thought I had time to meditate. The thought of it seemed overwhelming until I picked up this book. I received it on Tuesday and, it is such an easy read, have been able to get through a lot of it. This book really tries to take the mystery out of meditation and boils it down to simple concepts that are accessible to even nay sayers like myself. Will try to incorporate these techniques into my daily life and, hopefully, I will wind up as positive and happy as the author! Your task in meditation is to remain in the awareness of mind rather than going off on a date with a beautiful thought or destructive emotion.  When you notice a thought or emotion, you return your mind to the object of your meditation:  the breath, a form, sounds, or sensation without further ado. 2. Feel the air on your skin, smell the air around you, hear the birds around you, the noises. If your brain wanders to the to-do list and you realize you’re no longer meditating, begin again. Again, there are several styles of Qigong out there, and you may need to try with different teachers or DVDs to find the one that suits you. Our Signature Unplug Meditation Class is 45 minutes (but feels like 30) and is guided by our inspirational teachers. Through breath and/or body awareness you will easily connect with the present moment. Be aware of your thoughts, feelings and sensations. Accept what is and learn techniques you can carry your day. This is meditation reinvented for the minimalist. Mindfulness has become a mainstay of modern life. Millions have found it to be a powerful tool for reducing stress, enhancing attention, and instilling tranquility - but Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu insists it can be so much more. There is too much mind in mindfulness today. It shouldn't just be about thinking and relaxing - Murphy-Shigematsu shows us how much more enlightening an experience it can be when we add caring and a concern for our fellow beings to the practice. Meditation can be an effective form of stress reduction and has the potential to improve quality of life and decrease health care costs. Meditation involves achieving a state of 'thoughtless awareness' in which the excessive stress producing activity of the mind is neutralized without reducing alertness and effectiveness. Moving Meditation: Tai Chi and Qigong are two of the most popular forms of moving meditation. In these focused awareness practices, you use a combination of visualization, movement, and focus to draw chi or life force into your body and mind. For many people who easily get into The Zone, running is a form of moving meditation. Yoga and walking can also be forms of moving meditation when you practice them with mindful awareness.

You have asked for an exact technique and have received various instructions here. And you’ll receive varied instructions online. How do you choose which to follow? The value of learning from a certified teacher of Transcendental Meditation is that you’ll get the exact technique. Maharishi was very specific regarding how the technique is practiced in an effortless way. And he was very specific regarding how it should be taught. Certified teachers will teach you Transcendental Meditation exactly as they have been instructed to. It’s the only way you can be sure you’re getting the authentic technique that Maharishi said has its origins in the ancient Vedic tradition. Your TM teacher honors that tradition with a short (2-minute) ceremony of gratitude at the beginning of your instruction that you watch. That way you begin your practice by appreciating the ancient tradition that’s at the basis of this form of meditation. Transcendental Meditation is effortless and easy, but it’s also easy to practice incorrectly. And if one practices it incorrectly, then it’s not Transcendental Meditation. In a systematic fashion your TM teacher helps you achieve just the right approach to the correct practice.

3. For The Minimalist: No app or teacher needed. Close your eyes and count to five and then back down to one. Repeat this for 10 minutes (try setting a gentle alarm to let you know when time is up). When your mind wanders, which it will, come back to counting. That’s it. If you need a little extra assistance, check out this easy breathing method that ABC news anchor anchor Dan Harris uses.

She incorporates a enthusiasm for meditation and incorporates tactics that will help uncover stillness in all of her classes. You will see a peaceful and peaceful House to practice and find out about your mind and physique under her direction.

Essentially, the science “proves” what we know to be true from the actual experience of meditating. What the data demonstrate is that meditation facilitates strengthening the Assessment Center, weakening the unhelpful aspects of the Me Center (that can cause you to take things personally), strengthening the helpful parts of the Me Center (involved with empathy and understanding others) and changing the connections to/from the bodily sensation/fear centers such that you experience sensations in a less reactive, more balanced and holistic way. In a very real way, you literally are changing your brain for the better when you meditate.

Meditation, you may have noticed, is becoming as ubiquitous as Starbucks. Studies suggest that it can improve concentration and working memory, lower blood pressure, and even boost immune-system functioning, among many other benefits. Nearly 1,000 apps, such as Headspace and Calm, promise to help you find inner stillness in a now $1.1 billion meditation and mindfulness industry, which includes therapy, classes, retreats, and other services. This swift commercialization is alarming some longtime teachers, who worry that the new studios present an attractive but diluted version of spiritual practices.

This is the “gateway” to all forms of meditation. It’s great for beginners and can be done anywhere. The intention is to bring focus to and release tension in the physical body through your breathing.

Reply In reaction into the negativity facet you converse about previously mentioned – it’s going to take a while to actually believe that the “not my dilemma” mentality rather than experience guilty about it. I sit in a very incredibly hot tub each day with my husband or wife and we talk about the working day or issues and bubble absent issues. I utilize a “mattress of nails” mat and pillow – it really appears to assistance. I get reiki sessions a few times a yr and try and just stress about myself. At 45 I’m able to inform matters aren’t the things they use to become – which I am OK with. I’ve Reduce off all my extended stringy hair and went for an excellent small pixie Slice to work on reinventing myself and preserving it fresh.

5. For The Non-Committal: Listen to a free guided meditation online (try one of UCLA’s mindfulness meditations or Tara Brach’s guided meditation to get started). These can range anywhere from three to 12 minutes. You may spend more time listening than meditating, but this can be helpful for a beginner. No commitment or money required.

Of course, the traditional context of meditation is self-discovery. Through slowing down and observing the movement of your own mind, you can perceive and understand your habitual patterns of thought and behavior. You can recognize deep or hidden motivations within. And through regular meditation, you can marshal your attention to focus on the things that are most important to you—your goals and visions.

There is also the practice of mindfulness during our daily activities: while eating, walking, and talking. For “daily life” meditation, the practice is to pay attention to what is going on in the present moment, to be aware of what is happening – and not living in “automatic mode”. If you are speaking, that means paying attention to the words you speak, how you speak them, and to listen with presence and attention. If you are walking, that means being more aware of your body movements, your feet touching the ground, the sounds you are hearing, etc.

I love this article on meditation, Sandra. This line speaks to me – “Here’s the thing, meditation is simple, but not necessarily easy.” That is so true! I have found that meditation keeps me more centered, calm, and happy. I’m at the point, where I notice if I skip a day or two and feel unsettled.
