In general, and I am talking from a clinical perspective here, people who focus more on others than themselves actually have Me Centers that are working overtime as well. They are focused on self, it just manifests differently. In many cases, (and again, this is an overview, not a generalization to everyone), people who are more people-pleasing (than overtly focused on self first) tend to act in selfless ways in the hopes that they will be accepted and loved by those very people they are helping or being concerned about. Or, they fear losing those people, so focus on them for that reason. We profile a couple of people in the book like this (e.g., Abby, Sarah, and others).

My process is simple: I set the 21-minute timer on my iPhone — I always need a minute to settle in — close my eyes, and start to silently repeat my mantra. Per my TM teachings, I don’t try to maintain a steady rhythm to the sound, although it usually coincides loosely with my breathing.

Truth: The real purpose of meditation isn’t to tune out and get away from it all but to tune in and get in touch with your true Self – that eternal aspect of yourself that goes beyond all the ever-changing, external circumstances of your life. In meditation you dive below the mind’s churning surface, which tends to be filled with repetitive thoughts about the past and worries about the future, into the still point of pure consciousness. In this state of transcendent awareness, you let go of all the stories you’ve been telling yourself about who you are, what is limiting you, and where you fall short – and you experience the truth that your deepest Self is infinite and unbounded.

Set a time every day, for example, 7:00 to 7:20 every morning, and 5:30 to 5:50 every evening. Use the same chair to meditate every time and make the practice automatic by sandwiching it in between two things that you have to do anyway, like showering and brushing your teeth in the morning and eating breakfast afterward. If you know that after showering you have to meditate before you eat breakfast, then you are not worried about the right mood and you just do it.
Sharon Salzberg, a meditation teacher with 45 years of experience and the author of the best-selling book “Real Happiness,” said: “There’s been a whole secularization of the movement, and you now hear about it in a medical context and as stress reduction more than anything, like the mental gym. It can be off-putting to walk into a room with statues that you may not be able to relate to. So why not create that environment where people can drop things that are causing them stress, and do it in a contemporary way that doesn’t freak people out? It meets a lot of needs.”
