If you want a meditation practice that will allow you to experience your core Self, without thought, then you need a practice that can take you beyond the mind and give you the experience of pure awareness. For that, traditionally what is needed is a silent mantra meditation, such as Primordial Sound Meditation.

“Vipassana” is a Pali word that means “insight” or “clear seeing”. It is a traditional Buddhist practice, dating back to 6th century BC. Vipassana-meditation, as taught in the last few decades, comes from the Theravada Buddhist tradition, and was popularized by S. N. Goenka and the Vipassana movement.
My spiritual life today does not include formal church services or incense, although I sometimes meditate at the beautiful Baha’i temple just outside of Chicago, and might linger there awhile over an inspirational reading.
I love your guided meditations. When you spoke to vibrating with the cosmos at awesomeness fest, I was perplexed. What does that mean? Well, after putting Kundalini meditations into my daily practice I learned to know that feeling of connecting to source energy felt like. It’s increadible getting the energie flowing and to actually feel a vibration in your body just thru breath work and chanting. Amazing! You have cracked me open to flow. Thank you! ????
Don’t stick with meditation techniques that aren’t leading to inner silence. Unless you transcend the everyday mind, you aren’t truly meditating. Find a technique that works more or less automatically. In India, there are many kinds of mantra meditation, for example. Or simply follow the in and out of your breathing, not paying attention to your thoughts at all. The mind wants to find its source in silence. Give it a chance by letting go.
Research also suggests that the psychological benefits of Transcendental Meditation are cumulative. In 2012 researcher Fred Travis was invited to present his research at the New York Academy of Sciences. He described his studies (published in peer-reviewed journals) of individuals who have been meditating several decades. In short, they reported experiences of cosmic consciousness, in which the the oneness of everything is a living reality. They identify more with their universal, immortal nature than with their individual ego. In addition to using content analysis to characterize the experiences of these individuals compared to shorter-term practitioners and with people who don’t meditate, Dr. Travis also conducted some neurophysiological tests and found that these three groups could also be distinguished neurophysiologically.
This video combines the binaural tones with contemplative questions (written on the screen). This integration helps you listen to your own intuition on what to do in life. Big questions are asked, some without an answer: “Who are you?”
Whenever you bring awareness to what you’re directly experiencing via your senses, or to your state of mind via your thoughts and emotions, you’re being mindful. And there’s growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you’re actually remodeling the physical structure of your brain.

There are all kinds of ways to meditate and lots of tools to help you create a meditation practice that’s right for you. If one doesn’t quite click, try another. Let yourself adjust to this new habit and make it your own. Just remember: Anyone can meditate as long as they want to. That includes you.
Addendum: For those wanting to start a meditation practice or who might be experiencing emotional issues, memories, etc. when meditating, please seek out an experienced medtiation teacher. I have received some comments from people stating they do not believe meditation works (which is likely true for some people) or that it could be harmful if done incorrectly. Obviously, meditation has been very positive for me, but I have always worked with a meditation teacher or mentor and I would suggest you do the same, as a teacher can help you figure out what is right for you and guide you through any difficulties you may be having.
Meditation has entered the mainstream of modern Western culture, prescribed by physicians and practiced by everyone from business executives, artists, and scientists to students, teachers, military personnel, and – on a promising note – politicians.
In these classes, we’re practicing self-directed positive neuroplasticity. It’s like we’re getting the remote control to our emotions. Learning how to turn up happiness and awe… Learning how to make positive changes in the brain and therefore our lives.
layers is the human condition. Fibromyalgia ,in youth is sometimes combined with a foggy head feeling[[or head not connected to the body feeling] . That is to say,if the new spirit enters ,and bonds with the body ,in an incomplete way. Abuse, Drugs, Emotion distress, the bonding is not complete.
Give yourself credit. Taking the time out of your day to pause is no small task. Even if the day’s practice doesn’t come naturally, you’re already doing something good for yourself just by putting in the effort. It’s called a practice for a reason; keep practicing. Sure it’s nice to meditate for enlightenment, but moreso, that you learn to connect with the experience of the present moment.
good article – thanks – fits with what I feel is happening during meditation, and the effects after. Interesting to know how to maximise the effects; e.g. is 90 minutes session any better than 15 minutes?

Hi there, Firstly, no question is stupid. We’re all here to learn. It’s okay to meditate under color light as long as you’re comfortable with it. As for breathing and the other concerns you’ve mentioned, I suggest you get a meditation or yoga teacher near where you are to guide you. A teacher will be of tremendous help in assisting you with these areas (for example, by demonstrating and guiding you the proper way to breathe) as well as increase your confidence in meditation. All the best!

Thank you, Rosa. I’m glad that you find the article useful. Yes, I understand that sometimes, life can be so hectic that it seems impossible to find the time to meditate. My husband loves to meditate on the subway on his way to work. He practices Transcendental Meditation. Once he’s settled on the train, he shuts his eyes and begins his mantra. You can begin your own commuter meditation today. Here are two easy ways to get started meditating on the subway, train or bus:
Meditation is not an active activity, so it is okay to meditate after eating; you may want also go to the bathroom beforehand if you’re worried about interrupting yourself. Since the brain is actually more likely to wander if you’re hungry, meditating after eating may be better than meditating beforehand.
I was told about meditation in that it can help me with stress , which will cause me to stop over eating that will cause me to loose weight. I would like to know how?. I would like to know in what areas can meditation help?
Over in Portland, Oregon, Kristin Reiter’s new studio, Hush, has a similar pop-in-and-meditate model. Reiter, who works full-time as Nike’s Global Concept Director, opened Hush a few weeks ago to family and friends and will open to the public in three weeks. Reiter told Racked she’s less interested in the profit of opening a business and more focused on making meditation accessible.
With all these types of meditation in Yoga, you are likely to find one that you like. If you are a musician, perhaps nada yoga is something that will attract you. If you are a devotional person, kriya yoga is a good option. Kundalini and Chakra meditation should only be attempted with a teacher.
Guided meditations have become increasingly popular in the past few years. A guided meditation is led by someone else, either in person or via a recording, that will usually (although, not always) have a theme and relaxing music playing in the background. Guided meditations generally last anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the purpose or theme, and they come in all styles—including healing, manifesting, and going within to find your purpose. Because guided meditations are led by another person, this style of meditation is great for beginners and those who may struggle with sitting still for more than just a few minutes at a time. They are also beneficial if you would like to enhance your existing practice or focus your energy and attention on a specific outcome.
