In contrast, if you meditate on a regular basis, several positive things happen. Said another way, your ability to ignore sensations of anxiety is enhanced as you begin to break that connection between the unhelpful parts of the Me Center and the bodily sensation/fear centers. As a result, you are more readily able to see those sensations for what they are and not respond as strongly to them (thanks to your strengthened Assessment Center).

There are Buddhist meditation groups in most major cities.  You’ll also find secular meditation studios with names like “unplug” or “the den” in many urban areas.  Just make sure they’re teaching the authentic practice of mindfulness.  You can find meditation groups online too if you’re not close to a city.

You may also want to consider looking for a meditation center near where you’re living and get some face-to-face guidance from an experienced meditation teacher. Meditating with a group of people can also be very helpful and energizing. Besides the social support from other people, you’ll also learn a lot from the experience of other students.

The only wrong way to meditate is to create impossible expectations, criticize yourself for not living up to them, and then give up altogether. “People get so discouraged, saying, ‘I couldn’t make my mind blank’ or ‘I couldn’t have only beautiful thoughts,'” says Salzberg. “It doesn’t matter; truly, it’s all about moving on and beginning again.” What if you’re the type of person who can’t focus on anything for more than ten seconds? Let it go. “When you first try to rest your attention on the feeling of the breath, it’s not likely to be 800 breaths before your mind wanders; it’s likely to be one, or maybe three, and then you spin off somewhere,” Salzberg says. “That’s where the training comes in. The object that is the focus of the practice (for instance, the movement of the abdomen) is called the “primary object”. And a “secondary object” is anything else that arises in your field of perception – either through your five senses (sound, smell, itchiness in the body, etc.) or through the mind (thought, memory, feeling, etc.). My bet is that the ventromedial prefrontal cortex in these folks also is very active. I would also venture to guess that these folks are focusing on/concerned about people who they view as being similar to them (as opposed to dissimilar). So, they will benefit from strengthening the part of the brain that enhances empathy for dissimilar others as well. Remember, it’s all about having a balanced perspective, which is what meditation helps facilitate.

Spiritual knowledge including meditation techniques is available through enlightened Masters or through the holy scriptures. No body should charge you to explain you a meditation technique. No teacher can teach meditation. Teachers add to the already accumulated knowledge about the worldly things and a true Guru or Master, who never charges for his or her services, takes away your learning leaving your mind empty of thoughts, feelings, emotions and desires, thereby making you a fully contented and blissful. I came across a phrase lately–zuo wang, Chinese for “sitting forgetting.” I loved the concept. The Chinese characters themselves are wonderful. 坐 shows two people sitting on the ground. 忘 shows the heart underneath while something above flees away. Lately I have been focusing using this as a reminder–when a thought enters, I just let it float away while my heart stays grounded. Or sometimes, if the thought is more persistent, I gently remind myself to “forget it.” That seems to loosen its hold.

Especially at first, we become more aware of our rampant thoughts and crazy emotional swings.
