Thank you so much for these helpful tips! I tried meditating for twenty minutes (for the first time), as you suggest, and, although I have to work on focusing, I actually felt more relaxed than I have in a long time! I plan to continue and improve daily. Best wishes!

Sit comfortably on a cushion, chair, couch, or bed.  You can cross your legs or place your feet flat on the floor if you’re in a chair.  Your back should be straight, but not rigid.  Be sure to allow for its natural curve.  When the back is straight, the inner air or energy (“prana”) will flow more easily through the subtle channels of the body. This helps your mind to relax.

This is brilliant Gabby! Thank you! Last week I decided it was time to do Vispassana soon, so to lead up to it, I’m doing a 12 hour silent retreat at home. 3 hours dedicated to reading a book on mindfulness, 3 hours of soulful journaling and 6 hours of meditation (several guided meditations, including your Kundalini videos I purchased, and 2 hours of totally silent meditation). Thanks for your loving guidance to raise our frequency. I can’t wait for your global meditation ??

This is actually the true purpose behind all kinds of meditation, and not a meditation type in itself. All traditional techniques of meditation recognize that the object of focus, and even the process of monitoring, is just a means to train the mind, so that effortless inner silence and deeper states of consciousness can be discovered. Eventually both the object of focus and the process itself is left behind, and there is only left the true self of the practitioner, as “pure presence”.

It’s also helpful to set an intention for the rest of your day once you finish your practice. Seal the deal with a positive intention like, I choose to carry this peace with me for the rest of the day. Set yourself up to win with a silent prayer after your meditation.

About the time for meditation, the best time to meditate is the time when you can sit down and meditate without too much interruption. So, it varies from one person to another. Some can only meditate before they leave their home for work. Others can only find time to mediate after they come back from work. Find the best time to meditate within your own daily routine. If you don’t have any limitation in time, excellent. Then, find the time period where a meditation session will make you feel the most energized, or the most calm, depending on your purpose of meditation. So, you’d have to experiment it on yourself to find the best slot.

If you would like to know more about posture and the mechanics of meditation, watch this series of very short videos:  Dare to Meditate.  You’ll also find many excellent videos on what meditation really is there.

Hi Melanie, it’s possible to use meditation-type music as a focal point for meditation. However, for beginners, it may be easier to start with the breaths first. But that doesn’t mean you can’t play relaxing music in the background. You just focus your attention on your breathing and not the music. However, don’t let what I think limit you. Try out both ways and decide for yourself.

There’s no hard and fast rule on this. What’s most important is to make them aware of the value of meditation through your example and then look for their receptiveness. Some children may be ready for meditation as early as eight or ten years of age. Other kids, even those growing up in homes where both parents meditate, may not feel drawn to meditating themselves until they are in their late teens. It’s important that kids don’t feel pressured to meditate because their parents want them to. The best indication that they are ready to start meditating is when they express their own curiosity and desire to learn.

Patients suffering from post-traumatic stress problems who learned the TM technique showed significant reduction in depression after four months, in contrast to others who were randomly assigned to receive psychotherapy. Reference: Journal of Counseling and Development 64:212–215, 1985.

Japa meditation is a mantra-based meditation path that is one of the oldest, most revered classical techniques known today. The word “mantra” translates to mind vehicle or mind instrument. Japa meditation has the practitioner repeating a word or phrase for the duration of the meditation, with the mantra being the focal point throughout.

You will be opening up channels of intuition in the brain that many would say is the next big part of the brain develops. She knows more than the original instinctive brain, the emotional brain, the intellectual brain Now intuitive brain. To get there, turn off the bandwidth. Meditation can do this, then you may just have a much clearer set of channels, it is similar, although the recapitulation of past memories, or if you try to imagine what it might do in the future is now.

A group can better support an individual’s inward journey. It’s inspiring and motivating to connect with others who share our intentions for world peace. It is easier to apply Gandhi’s suggestion to “be the change you wish to see in the world” when you are part of a collective crowd. According to Andrew Kelley at The Boston Buddha, it is also a good way to “collectively unify and add strength to our intentions” with a common group goal even if the goal is just to be more relaxed and less reactive.

But if you apply the principle of meditation to experiences that come before you, you can fully attend to what is taking place. You can attend to your initial reaction without reacting to your reaction: “Oh, look how threatened I feel by that.” Let yourself be open to experiencing your reaction and it will move through you and allow other spontaneous responses to also come forward, so that you can select the one that is most helpful in that particular situation.

Ultimately, all of the articles, expert insights and advice about meditation are a great thing. But since it can feel overwhelming for beginners — and everyone has a different learning style — here are five options on how to get started.

I’ve been meditating for over two years. I suffer from ADHD & PTSD. It has changed my life for the better..Two years ago, I would have laughed at anyone who told me I could be at peace and quiet my mind using meditation. How wrong was I? Very. Knowing how my mind constantly chatters if the only reason I hadn’t looked into it long before then..

Notice when your mind wanders from your breath. Inevitably, your attention will leave the breath and wander to other places. Don’t worry. There’s no need to block or eliminate thinking. When you notice your mind wandering gently return your attention to the breath.

Now that you are dealing with your heartbeat like a sound or simply a sensation, bring your consciousness on your fingertips, for your hands. See where by my fingers are? Carry your consciousness into your fingertips.

As you focus on the breath, you will notice that other perceptions and sensations continue to appear: sounds, feelings in the body, emotions, etc. Simply notice these phenomena as they emerge in the field of awareness, and then return to the sensation of breathing. The attention is kept in the object of concentration (the breathing), while these other thoughts or sensations are there simply as “background noise”.

Many Many thanks. Breathing meditation (Zhuanqi) — to focus on the breath, or “unite mind and qi”. The instruction is your vital breath until it is supremely soft”. Sometimes this is done by simply quietly observing the breath (similar to Mindfulness Meditation in Buddhism); in other traditions it is by following certain patterns of exhalation and inhalation, so that one becomes directly aware of the “dynamisms of Heaven and Earth” through ascending and descending breath (a type of Qigong, similar to Pranayama in Yoga). Here are some types of meditation practiced in Yoga. The most common and universal Yoga meditation one is the “third eye meditation”. Other popular ones involve concentrating on a chakra, repeating a mantra, visualization of light, or gazing meditations.  The reason that chanting the Lord's names is such an effective process is because the Lord and His names are identical: they are the same spiritual energy. By chanting Hare Krishna we are in immediate contact with God. If we chant someone else's name, we cannot enjoy their association because the name and the person are different. For example, by chanting "water, water, water," we do not quench our thirst because water and the name are two different things. But in the spiritual world everything is absolute. Krishna is nondifferent from His names and, therefore, we can feel His presence simply by chanting His names. This is further elaborated in the Caitanya-caritamrta (Madhya-lila, 17.131-133), which explains that there is no difference between the Lord's name, form, or personality, and they are all transcendentally sweet. Krishna's name is the same as Krishna Himself, and is not material in any way. It gives spiritual benedictions and is full of pleasure. But in the material world everything is different. Furthermore, in Caitanya-cartamrta (Adi-lila, 17.22, and the Padma Purana), the Hare Krishna maha-mantra is said to be the sound incarnation of Krishna, and anyone who chants this mantra is in direct association with Krishna and is delivered from the clutches of the material energy. The TM technique’s effectiveness is the same whether you believe it will work or are completely skeptical. That’s because it automatically and effortlessly allows your active thinking mind to settle down to a state of deep inner calm. Hi Gabby! I’m new to meditation and adding a spiritual practice to my life. I can’t believe I made it this long without it! I’ve learned so much about myself and have come leaps and bounds. I struggle a lot with “worry” and have had a really difficult time with stress due to finances and I find this IS slowly improving, and I FEEL my ~ING taking over so much of that “worry” for me, I’m just hoping you have an affirmation you can share that I can repeat when I have a really big “worry moment” (ie, after I look at my bank account and panic?)? 3. Still having trouble focusing? Try essential oils. “Whole Foods has a great orange essential oil by Now, (and orange scents makes you happy) and put a little in your palms and rub your hands,” says Schwartz. “You smell it, you put your hands down and start listening to everything around you, be aware of the present moment and when your mind starts to wander, bring your hands back up and smell your hands again, and be aware of the moment again. Essential oils can totally shift your mood, and put you in the present moment. You want to get your mind and body in the same zip code.” If you’re just getting started this should get you going in the right direction. Want more tips on how to get started? Meditation is not complicated and does not require any special equipment or accessories. We don’t have to meditate for hours to feel the benefits of this powerful practice. Even just a few minutes of quiet, mindful breathing can transform us.

Vipassana is an excellent meditation to help you ground yourself in your body, and understand how the processes of your mind work. It is a very popular style of meditation. You can find plenty of teachers, websites, and books about it, as well as 3~10 days retreats (donation based). The teaching of it is always free. There are no formalities or rituals attached to the practice.

Hi Lucy, meditation is a good way to sharpen one’s concentration. However, to be frank with you, it’s not a quick fix. So if you’re practising now and hope to see results immediately or within a week, you’ll probably be disappointed. You’ve to keep at it to reap its benefits. Good luck for your exams.

One common visualization practice is centered around health. By visualizing your body-mind as being healthy, vibrant, and energized—or grounded, peaceful, and calm—you can begin to elicit these things both mentally and physically. Another approach is using visual imagery for creative purposes. By constructing an image in your mind of what your life might look like after having accomplished a goal and really seeing yourself having already achieved it is a way to begin living in ways that support the manifestation of your desired outcome.

Truth:  Meditation is a practice that takes us beyond the noisy chatter of the mind into stillness and silence. It doesn’t require a specific spiritual belief, and many people of many different religions practice meditation without any conflict with their current religious beliefs. meditators have no particular religious beliefs or are atheist or agnostic. They meditate in order to experience inner quiet and the numerous physical and mental health benefits of the practice – including lowered blood pressure, stress reduction, and restful sleep. The original reason that I started meditating was to help myself stop smoking. Meditation helps us to enrich our lives. It enables us to enjoy whatever we do in our lives more fully and happily – whether that is playing sports, taking care of our children, or advancing in our career.

First off please come to Canada (Ontario). Second I am new to all of the yoga/mediation world, I love listening to your books and vlogs. There are three aspects to mindfulness meditation:  mindfulness, watchful awareness, and spaciously abiding.  You’re mindful of the object, you’re aware that you’re mindful and you’re cognizant of the environment around you, and you’re abiding spaciously.

Really be there. If your attention is somewhere else, thinking about your next appointment, errand or meal, of course you won’t find silence. To meditate, your intention must be clear and free of other obligations.

You have shared about your sobriety I chair an 11th step Meditation mtg at my local AA club as you know the 11th step is: Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God.

According to Andrew Kelley at The Boston Buddha, it is also a good way to “collectively unify and add strength to our intentions” with a common group goal even if the goal is just to be more relaxed and less reactive.

A study done by research scientists at UC Davis showed that meditation can lower the amount of cortisol in the body, otherwise known as the stress hormone. Less cortisol, less stress, more capacity for joy. And a separate study done at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine showed that meditation can provide a level of relief from symptoms of anxiety and depression similar to that of antidepressant drugs. But no prescription needed!

In today’s busy, stressed-out, modern world it’s difficult to find the time to meditate, or believe we actually can meditate and experience the benefits first-hand. Yet with so many science-based statistics and more than 10 million practicing meditators in the U.S. alone, there must be something to it.

People often begin meditation by learning to be aware of the breath as the object.  Alternatively, you could use a form like a rock, a flower, or a sacred image.  Or you could use one of the senses and place your attention on sound, physical sensations, or taste.  These are all good possibilities for beginners.  Later on, once you have a good foundation in mindfulness, you can actually use thoughts and emotions as objects as well.

Inspired to give it a go? Start with all the best apps that’ll make meditation easier. “I’m so glad that meditation apps have become popular downloads,” says wellness expert Jeannine Morris. “What used to be looked at as hippie dippy has become a mainstream necessity.” Whether you hope to relax, focus, or sleep better, meditation apps can help you achieve your healthiest mindset. “The overall intent is to make meditation really fundamental and easy to understand,” Reiter said. “The idea is that we are creative professional people, and we’re inundated with information and constantly sold to. There’s a lot going on, but then take all that away and suggest nothingness. You disconnect from everything and take care of yourself.”

“Even if you think you can’t meditate, we have teachers who will prove you delightfully wrong.” With a claim like that, you better have the goods to back it up. And boy, do MNDFL studios have the goods. For starters, the environment is all kinds of comfy-cozy — think about the most comfortable (and clean) living room you can imagine, then multiply it by 10. But what really makes these NYC-based studios sing is their attention to different mindful practices. There are meditations for heart health, energy, emotion regulation, and even classes for kids. And with sessions starting at only $10, your mind won’t be on your wallet.

Over the last several decades, many scientist have become fascinated with researching physiological correlates of the meditative state—studying Tibetan monks, Indian yogis and trained Western meditators as their subjects. One thing that has become obvious: different meditation techniques do not produce the same levels of relaxation, change in breath rate, brain patterns, or benefits for mind and body. For example, recent research on mindfulness meditation recorded a pattern of increased gamma in the rear of the brain, and found no significant changes in alpha activity. [3] Increased gamma is associated with heightened focus of attention.

This inner vacation is not a retreat from the world but the foundation for finding inner peace. You must also learn to apply the principle of attending in your worldly activities, so that you can apply yourself in the world more effectively. Through practicing meditation you can learn to be open to what comes before you in your daily life and give it your full attention.

Mindfulness meditation is a useful meditation that can help practitioners to change the way he or she relates to thoughts and emotions. In this meditation, you learn not to interfere with the content of your mind and simply to observe them. So you may want to give a try.

At the same time, don’t torture yourself with overwhelming emotions.  Apply the process with discernment.  If the emotions are too strong, wild, and overwhelming, end your meditation session.  Soothe yourself, do something you enjoy, or seek support.

effectively expands the range of one’s consciousness—the subconscious gradually becomes conscious through regular practice—one comes to intimately know the fullness of one’s own Self; this directly counteracts feelings of emptiness, a condition seen so prevalent in our society

Notice when your mind wanders from your breath. Inevitably, your attention will leave the breath and wander other places. Don’t worry. There’s no need to block or eliminate thinking. When you notice your mind wandering gently return your attention to the breath.

Meditation requires your mind to be quiet. Therefore, anything that stimulates your mind just before your sitting is not going to be very helpful, such as a heated argument with your partner, an exciting computer game, a dramatic movie or a thought-provoking book. If you find yourself often having a hard time sitting still during meditation, try to avoid engaging in any of these activities prior to your session.

while driving you can recite mantras and practice breath work. you can also meditate while walking. though these types of meditations have a different result they are still beneficial for calming your mind and clearing out any negative energy or emotions.

Thank you for the kind words. In meditation, any attempt to quiet the mind using force won’t work. The everyday mind is full of thoughts, feelings, sensations, worries, daydreams and fantasies. But at a deeper level, the mind begins in silence. Finding that level deeper than thought is the essence of meditation.

Popular styles of mantra-based meditation are Primordial Sound Meditation as taught by Deepak Chopra and the age-old practice of the So Hum meditation. Both of these practices are easily learned in person or online for your convenience.

Meditation is not complicated and does not require any special equipment or accessories. We don’t have to meditate for hours to feel the benefits of this powerful practice. Even just a few minutes of quiet, mindful breathing can transform us.

Like many newcomers to meditation, you may be inclined to ask, “Seriously, I’m supposed to do this every day?” Ah, but you might want to. As with the body, exercising your mind is all about consistency, and results can be swift. Meditating for 25 minutes for three consecutive days was enough to alleviate at least some stress when test subjects were asked to perform demanding tasks in front of an intimidating audience for a Carnegie Mellon University study whose results were published earlier this year. To really feel the benefits, though, try to stick with daily meditation for at least 30 days. “Every day is ideal, but three times a week will do. Twenty minutes is better than ten, but if you’ve only got five, do five,” says Salzberg. “The every-day-ness of it is the most potent thing. You’ll see a difference.”

If you are concerned about being comfortable during the session, please call us at 212.477.0487 to discuss further options.

Many more specific types of meditation exist (transcendental meditation, mantra meditation, Zen meditation, etc.) but you don’t need to subscribe to any one modality in order to benefit. Start with a basic practice and go on to explore specific types if they resonate with you, but feel free to stick to whatever feels good, no matter simple or specialized.

TM instruction requires personal one-on-one instruction from a certified TM teacher, so it won’t be taught during this group introduction. However, you’ll have the opportunity to meet local TM teachers and sign up to learn the TM technique.

Guests, including many of the Chopra family, packed themselves tightly into the meditation room at Unplug Meditation in West Los Angeles as Mallika told the room that her parents taught her to meditate at age nine and that she would come home from school and meditate with her mother as a way to feel close.

In general, however, it is known that TM involves the use of a mantra and is practiced for 15–20 minutes twice per day while sitting with one’s eyes closed. The mantra is not unique, and is given to the practitioner based on his gender and age. They are also not “meaningless sounds” – rather, they are Tantric names of Hindu deities. This probably is irrelevant for most people.

Keep it simple at the beginning and just feel out some different techniques. When you find one that you enjoy, the next step is to set aside 15 to 20 minutes each day to cultivate your meditation practice. From there, tend to your practice each day and you will experience a number of life-changing benefits.

Guided Meditation is like cooking with a recipe. It’s a good way to start, and you can eat the food you make like this. But once understand the main principles and flavors, you can cook your own dish. It will have a different, unique taste; it will be tailored for you, and more powerful. And then you will not want to use the recipe anymore – unless if you are trying a dish of another cuisine. 😉

From the age 7 until we reached our puberty, during the normal state of eyes open, awake and alert our brains were mainly operating in the alpha state of 7 to 14 Hz. Now during light sleep, meditation, or eyes closed relaxation we reach alpha state. At this level effective learning can take place after about 21 repetitions. Practice a new behaviour for about 21 times and that behaviour becomes a habit. Strong levels of physical healing can take place when the brain is at 10 Hz

I’ve found meditation to be a wonderful tool to help me release aches and pains that can seemingly appear out of nowhere. I’ve learned that these physical discomforts are simply my body trying to communicate emotions and other issues trapped in my body. By meditating on the issue, investigating it with objective curiosity (and without judgment), asking what message it has for me and being open to whatever arises, I can “magically” cure whatever ails me.

I’m Deepak Chopra and I’m going to do three things with you. First, I’m going to explain what meditation is and how it works. Secondly, I’m going to do a healing meditation with you. Thirdly, I’m going to do something really exciting — the law of attraction and meditation. So let’s start with the theory first:

4. For The Extremist: Go away for a weekend fully immerse yourself in meditation, silence or both. Some of the top-rated retreats in the country include the Esalen Institute and Spirit Rock Meditation Center in California, but there are plenty of options all over the U.S. Transcendental Meditation offers retreats as well. It’s important to note, however, these can get a little pricey.

The Sat Nam pulse meditation has hugely helped me. I suffer from panic attacks and I have been using this meditation to help calm me. I go to a quiet room and practice it and it’s moved me to tears because it has helped me. Sometimes, in the midst of a panic attack, I forget and then do it after the attack is over. Either way, I’m just thankful you shared it.

Qigong meditation may be more attractive to people that like to integrate a more active body and energy work into the practice. If seated meditation is unbearable for you, and you prefer something a bit more active, try some of the more dynamic forms of Qigong. Again, there are several styles of Qigong out there, and you may need to try with different teachers or DVDs to find the one that suits you.

However, in mindfulness meditation, you want to achieve a delicate balance of alertness and relaxation.  If you’re too tight, it will be difficult to experience a spacious state of mind, which is essential in meditation.  If you’re too loose, you’ll space out or fall asleep.

Truth:  There are busy, productive executives who have not missed a meditation in twenty-five years, and if you make meditation a priority, you will do it. If you feel like your schedule is too full, remember that even just a few minutes of meditation is better than none. We encourage you not to talk yourself out of meditating just because it’s a bit late or you feel too sleepy.

‘I am’ is a mantra. A mantra is a phrase that has no meaning. ‘I am Deepak’ has meaning as there’s a history behind that. But ‘I am’ is just a statement of existence. When Moses goes to the burning bush and asks God ‘what’s your name,’ God says ‘I am that I am.’ Jesus says before Abraham was, ‘I am.’

When we meditate, we quiet our mind and slip into the silence that’s the source of all happiness. There we discover increasing levels of bliss, inspiration, and love. Our experience of these powerful states creates vibrations that help heal the planet. As a famous Vedic verse states, “It is our duty to the rest of humanity to be perfectly healthy, because we are ripples in the ocean of consciousness, and when we are sick, even a little, we disrupt cosmic harmony.” Through meditation, we expand our awareness of the blissful nature of divine intelligence and contribute to greater peace and love in our world.

Chopra learned to meditate 35 years ago in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “I was lucky enough to have Maharishi Yogi as my direct teacher. He was the teacher for the world at the time, including the Beatles” he said.

For people who want to deepen their experience, there are places that teach traditional vedic meditation, where practitioners are given a specific mantra to use wherever they are in a session. At both Ziva Meditation and Ben Turshen Meditation, you can take a free introductory class, and then sign up for the eight-hour course, given over four days, which costs $400 to $1,200.

Interestingly, it’s effective because it’s completely effortless. The TM technique uses the natural tendency of the mind to automatically draw your attention inward, through quieter and quieter levels of thought, until you experience your own innermost nature — the most peaceful and silent level of your mind.

3.  Give the mind something to do. In the first stage of mindfulness meditation, we place our attention gently on an object.  The mind likes to be busy.  This gives it something to do, but in the process you’re gradually gaining the ability to direct your mind instead of allowing it to constantly control you.

We tend to make things feel more difficult than they are through procrastination. When it comes to household chores, writing assignments, tax returns and meditation, we’d often rather do anything but the task at hand. However, once we sit down with intention, we discover it’s not so hard after all.

Many parents say meditation is a helpful tool for their kids. More research is needed to understand how meditation might specifically benefit kids with learning and attention issues. But it can be a good way to help all kids cope with stress.

Meditation has entered the mainstream of modern Western culture, prescribed by physicians and practiced by everyone from business executives, artists, and scientists to students, teachers, military personnel, and – on a promising note – politicians.

All meditations that silently use a mantra have a similar goal – to take our awareness beyond thought, into pure silence, pure awareness. The mantras used in Primordial Sound Meditation and the way in which we select them, is very different from other techniques. The mantra is based on the vibration the universe was making at the moment of your birth. Those who have developed a Primordial Sound Meditation practice cite the benefits of stress reduction, better sleep patterns, and greater peace of mind in their lives. We have also attempted to eliminate the secrecy surrounding many meditation programs.

During the practice, whenever you drift away from the mantra to other thoughts, sounds, or physical sensations, you simply guide your attention back to the repetition of the mantra. Think of it as a dance back and forth between mantra and thought. Some mantras have a specific meaning and it’s said that by repeating the mantra, you are connecting to the energetic essence of its intention. Other mantras purposely have no meaning and are designed to help access deeper levels of silence. In this approach, eventually the mantra and thoughts will cancel one another out. When this happens, your conscious awareness transcends the busyness of the mind and reaches higher states of consciousness.

“I was smoking cigarettes, occasionally getting sloshed and totally stressed and stressing out my patients,” Chopra said on “GMA.” “When I started meditation, I started to lose my cravings and I settled down and I decided I was going to teach it.”

Kundalini Meditation — this is a very complex system of practice. The goal is the awakening of the “kundalini energy” which lies dormant on the base of the spine, the development of several psychic centers in the body, and, finally, enlightenment. There are several dangers associated with this practice, and it should not be attempted without the guidance of a qualified yogi.

People usually find that it is easier to focus with a mantra than with the breathing. Because a mantra is a word, and thoughts are usually perceived as words, it can be easier to keep the focus on a mantra rather than on the breathing. It is useful especially when the mind is racing with many thoughts, since it mantra meditation demands constant attention.

For the general public, this is perhaps the most advisable way to get started with meditation. It is the type of meditation that is most taught at schools and hospitals, as far as I am aware. The “mindfulness movement” as practiced nowadays in society at large, is not Buddhism, but an adaptation of Buddhist practices due to their benefits in good physical and mental health and general wellbeing.

Some meditation teachers insist that both the choice of word, and its correct pronunciation, is very important, due to the “vibration” associated to the sound and meaning, and that for this reason an initiation into it is essential. Others say that the mantra itself is only a tool to focus the mind, and the chosen word is completely irrelevant.

You’re right, The Course does use lots of Christian and also predominantly male terminology (Son of God etc). I would not get too put off by the terminology as the message is a good one. Think of ‘Primal Energy’, ‘Spirit’, ‘true essence’ or just pure LOVE when they use the word God if it helps. Jesus just being a means of showing how that ‘spirit’ can manifest in a human who is free from ego….like other spiritual humans (Buddha for example).

What drew me to these thinkers was their obvious respect for all people and religions, a high point of my Baha’i experience, along with echoes of TM’s credo to pay more attention to the present moment. I also recognized numerous similarities between the different faiths, including the call for quiet contemplation to better connect with the Divine within, known to Buddhists as “inner stillness.” Some Christians interpret Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God,” in a similar manner.

“Thoughts can make us sick or they can empower us,” says Sherly Sulaiman, a hypnotherapist with an Australian accent, who sits on a dais. “We want them to empower us, right?” She instructs us to lift an index finger every time a thought arises. “Remember, you are not the thought. You are aware of your thoughts.” Spa music wafts from the speakers as index fingers tap out a frantic Morse code. A truck horn blares. Eventually, a bell rings. “I’ll be outside,” says Sulaiman, “if you want to ask a question or share—or if you just want a healing hug.”

After my meditation yesterday I felt so positive & full of energy so I decided to wake up earlier today & meditate again with a mantra, I felt so peaceful & loved but then tears began to stream down my face & wouldn’t stop until I was crying a lot but did not feel sad just happy & grateful has this happened to anyone before, it felt like some kind of release?

Start with five or ten minutes and then gradually build up to more time in meditation.  You want to do enough so you begin to feel the positive benefits of meditation, but don’t start out trying to do way too much.  The key to success is regularity.  Try to sit every day, if possible or at least 4-5 times a week.

To understand more about Qigong and learn how to do it, I’d recommend getting a book or DVD set from Dr. Yang Jwing Ming, such as this one. But here goes an introductory overview of the practice of seated Qigong meditation:

“meditation for beginners guided meditation -meditation for beginners unplug meditation”

A few years ago, I realized that my lack of a spiritual life knocked everything else off-kilter. I also recognized that I needed a way to unplug from the stresses of everyday life or run the risk of slipping into serious substance abuse, anti-social behavior and/or a hermit’s existence.

No cell phones or electronics are allowed in the meditation room. You will be asked to hand in your devices when you check in. You are welcome to leave them at home/in your car if you prefer, but they will always be safe behind the front desk. It’s all about unplugging!

Choose a conducive environment. Find a nice, quiet place where you won’t be disturbed for fifteen minutes or longer. Sit down, relax and rest your hands on your lap. You can sit on the floor cross-legged with the support of a meditation cushion, or on any chair with your feet resting on the ground. It is not necessary to force yourself into a lotus position if you are not used to it.

Reply Juli – love your blog and it’s the only just one I go through. I typically avoid people who are negative, but I know that’s not possible to suit your needs. When I sense down I consider to spend time with positive people today.

Reply Lady, nameless remarks always come from precisely the same area: people who find themselves ashamed of them selves. They will’t bully the entire world again, so that they change to random horrible feedback via the online world to vent some childhood disgrace, some incident in the locker space or at a lunch desk or at band camp. Confident, I do yoga, meditate, and pray. I check out Samantha Bee!

This is a great start for me…I am just beginning to meditate and have zero information on it, so this website is perfect. I suffer from depression and alcoholism and have been advised to meditate. One question: do i always have to concentrate on my breathing, or are there other things I can focus on while I meditate?

When the mind becomes still and unwavering, higher wisdom emerges naturally. So the answer is yes, meditation definitely helps with the gaining of insights and wisdom. Apart from that, meditation has also helped many people to become more mindful of their feelings and intentions, which makes possible the eradication of deep-rooted tendencies and habits as well. But it’s not enough to just read about meditation and its many possible benefits. Try it for yourself and realize the benefits in your life. I wish you all the best.

Sit on your cushion or chair with a straight back. The upright posture helps you to concentrate on your breathing as you purposefully inhale and exhale. If you’re sitting in a chair with a back, try not to lean back against it or slouch. Stay as erect as possible.

Be assured that even if it feels like you have been thinking throughout your entire meditation, you are still receiving the benefits of your practice. You haven’t failed or wasted your time. When my friend and colleague David Simon taught meditation, he would often tell students, “The thought I’m having thoughts may be the most important thought you have ever thought, because before you had that thought, you may not have even known you were having thoughts. You probably thought you were your thoughts.” Simply noticing that you are having thoughts is a breakthrough because it begins to shift your internal reference point from ego mind to witnessing awareness. As you become less identified with your thoughts and stories, you experience greater peace and open to new possibilities.

We feel our lungs fill and release. As we focus on the smallest details of our respiration, other thoughts–of work, of family, of money–begin to recede, leaving us alone with the rise and fall of our chests.

The word yoga means union with one’s true nature, with God. The ancient practice of yoga has always been considered a mental technology of consciousness primarily involving meditation. In the last few decades the West has come to associate yoga with the physical postures, or asanas, of the yoga tradition. These asanas are certainly an integral part of yoga knowledge, along with such other branches of yoga as breathing exercises and moral behavior. And each of the eight limbs of limbs of yoga are important in attaining spiritual union.

It’s also helpful to an intention for the rest of your day once you finish your practice. Seal the deal with a positive intention like, I choose to carry this peace with me for the rest of the day. Set yourself up to win with a silent prayer after your meditation.

This meditation is very powerful in bringing inner freedom and peace; yet, if you don’t have previous experience with meditation, you may find it very hard to follow through. As an initial aid to give you a feeling for it, I would advise following some guided meditations from Mooji, in YouTube.

Inner Vision (Neiguan) — visualizing inside one’s body and mind, including the organs, “inner deities”, qi (vital force) movements, and thought processes. It’s a process of acquainting oneself with the wisdom of nature in your body. There are particular instructions for following this practice, and a good book or a teacher is required.

We have a strict policy for starting and ending classes on time. Unfortunately, if you are late, you will not be let into class so as to not disturb our meditators. Please always arrive early, plan time for possible traffic, parking, etc.

Great question! My background and practice is Vipassana, which is insight oriented meditation. There’s a significant emphasis on focused attention and increasing insight in that practice. Most of the research I looked at was attention or insight-oriented, including people making mental notes, reframing situations, and actual experience-focused (vs. narrative focused) medtiations. Compassion-oriented meditation has been studied as well (i.e. Metta meditation) but I did not include that data per se (though I use it daily in my own practice).

According to the guidelines for Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, an eight-week intensive program, some practitioners may find that negative emotions worsen before they improve. This is simply because of heightened awareness. Willoughby Britton, a professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University who studies challenging meditation experiences, suggests seeking out teachers with meditation-instructor training and at least three years of personal practice. But the onus is also on the studios.

Learning how to be still is the method of meditation. The process of cultivating stillness begins with the body. In the yoga tradition, you are guided by a competent teacher to keep your head, neck, and trunk straight while sitting in a meditative posture (asana). When you have learned to be comfortable in this posture, you should form a regular habit of practicing in the same posture at the same time and at the same place every day.

I have been meditating off and on for many years now. But i picked it up with regularity about two months back, been meditating for almost 2 hours since a month now. My life is a mess right now and I will credit that meditation has helped keep me sane. Though i feel very relaxed and stress free in the worldy way. I want your guidance. I dont FEEL god. i dont feel connected or the power of love or universe. Am i doing something wrong? Am i sitting with some wrong intention? OR am i just rushing it. Please share some advice.

#4: It is a place where there is something called observer effect, or the power of intention, which means intention is very powerful when brought to this space and it orchestrates its own fulfillment –what people call the law of attraction — so those are wonderful qualities of your own spirit. And in the two meditations I’m going to teach you we’ll get into this space so we find ourselves infinite possibilities, infinite correlation, infinite creativity, infinite imagination, and infinite power of intention. That’s what meditation is really about.

We should not sleep too much or go without it altogether, but sleep only moderately. To prevent too much sleep, we must try and have no thoughts or chalana [movement of the mind], we must eat only sattvic food and that only in moderate measure, and not indulge in too much physical activity. The more we control thought, activity and food the more we shall be able to control sleep.

6. Meditation is not the absence of thoughts.  People often think meditation means trying to rid the mind of thoughts.  That single misconception leads to a tremendous amount of frustration for people new to meditation. When you try to force your mind to be quiet, it never works.

Truth:  Some people are disappointed when they don’t experience visions, see colors, levitate, hear a choir of angels, or glimpse enlightenment when they meditate. Although we can have a variety of wonderful experiences when we meditate, including feelings of bliss and oneness, these aren’t the purpose of the practice. The real benefits of meditation are what happens in the other hours of the day when we’re going about our daily lives. When we emerge from our meditation session, we carry some of the stillness and silence of our practice with us, allowing us to be more creative, compassionate, centered, and loving to ourselves and everyone we encounter.

Deepak Chopra Meditation – Chopra is metaphorically described that the AIDS virus will send a “sound, which attracts DNA destruction”. The condition can be treated, according to Chopra, in which “the primordial sound of Ayurveda”. professor of medicine Lawrence Schneiderman said that ethical questions arise when alternative medicine is not based on empirical evidence and that “to put it mildly, Dr. Chopra offers a program to treat and prevent AIDS is empirical data in support.”

When a photo of a wall covered in lush green foliage showed up on Grace Clarke’s Instagram feed, she felt an immediate urge to track it down. Stressed out and headed to a meeting at Madewell, where she works as a social media copy editor, Ms. Clarke saw that the wall’s location was on East Eighth Street in Manhattan at a meditation studio called MNDFL, which opened in November.

Focusing the attention on a single object during the whole meditation session. This object may be the breath, a mantra, visualization, part of the body, external object, etc. As the practitioner advances, his ability to keep the flow of attention in the chosen object gets stronger, and distractions become less common and short-lived. Both the depth and steadiness of his attention are developed.

Like any practice, you have to want to do it in order to achieve results. It can be hard to start a meditation practice because it seems so foreign from what we’re taught to do. But I have good news: Meditating is much simpler than we make it out to be. Beginning a meditation practice requires only your slight willingness. Your desire to experience something new is all you need to get on a new path.

Thank you for your comment, it is true that many people do the mistake of associating meditation with concentration which is definitely not the same thing. These people are being mislead unfortunately and try for years to enter into meditation.

I also have 2 children that are very young (they are definitely future little yogi’s!) and while I always try to meditate when they are in bed or being quiet, sometimes I just NEED to meditate for a few minutes while they are awake and running around. Do you have any advice for getting “in the zone” with lots of interruptions and distractions?

Why is the Me Center allowed to process information this way, essentially unabated? The reason this happens, in part, is because the Assessment Center’s connection to the Me Center is relatively weak. If the Assessment Center was working at a higher capacity, it would modulate the excessive activity of the vmPFC (the part that takes things personally) and enhance the activity of the dmPFC (the part involved in understanding other’s thoughts and feelings). This would lead us to take in all the relevant information, discard erroneous data (that the Me Center might want to focus on exclusively) and view whatever is happening from a more balanced perspective – essentially decreasing the overthinking, ruminating and worrying that the Me Center is famous for promulgating. One helpful way to think of the Assessment Center is as a sort of “brake” for the unhelpful parts of the Me Center.

As a mindfulness teacher, I’ve seen how most people struggle with a busy mind or another obstacle when they start to meditate.  But after a few weeks, they start to get the hang of it, and they feel a discernible difference after practicing for a month.  The very same people have a completely different experience of and relationship to mediation after practicing for a year.

The traditional knowledge of yoga teaches that Life is previously provided to you, you happen to be absolutely cherished, you’re right here now. What’s older than Buddhism by thousands of years? Meditation. But for something so ancient, it’s remarkably adaptable. “The word used to come with this baggage of being part of a religion, but today that’s just no longer the case,” says Andy Puddicombe, a former Buddhist monk who runs the Headspace health and meditation website. Corporate figures, athletes, and tech executives have taken up the practice, attracted more by the promise of stress reduction and sharper mental focus than by spiritual enlightenment. Meditation, like yoga, is now offered at health clubs and drop-in studios, such as Unplug Meditation in Los Angeles. “I like to think meditation has been stripped down,” Puddicombe says. “You decide how you want to use it—for your job, for your relationships, to fall asleep faster.”

If you want to know more on how TM technique works, then I suggest that you read Maharishi Maheshi Yogi’s book “Science of Being and Art of Living”. It is a good book, highly repetitive, but still good. Beware, you will not be able to learn the actual technique from this book.

You have shared about your sobriety I chair an 11th step Meditation mtg at my local AA club as you know the 11th step is: Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God.

Truth: The benefits of meditation are both immediate and long-term. You can begin to experience benefits the first time you sit down to meditate and in the first few days of daily practice. Many scientific studies provide evidence that meditation has profound effects on the mind-body physiology within just weeks of practice. For example, a landmark study led by Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital found that as little as eight weeks of meditation not only helped people experience decreased anxiety and greater feelings of calm; it also produced growth in the areas of the brain associated with memory, empathy, sense of self, and stress regulation.

The instructor, Pushkara Blue, has  practiced mediation for over 30 years with spiritual teacher Sri Chinmoy. His classes are very clear and joyful. In them you will experience inspiring techniques for discovering the spiritual heart.

So, what’s it like to meditate? Speaking personally, it’s a calming, welcome break I look forward to ideally twice a day, but one that requires a constant, gentle nudging away from intruding thoughts.

Binaural Beats — Binaural beats were originally discovered in 1839 by physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove. He discovered when signals of two different frequencies are presented separately, one to each ear, your brain detects the phase variation between the frequencies and tries to reconcile that difference. This is used to generate alpha waves (10 Hz), which is the brain wave associated with initial levels of meditation. There is scientific research into why and how binaural beats work.

When I was a young girl I use to meditate alot. To escape my painful childhood I would go off to places I had never been. Sometimes into pictures. The deeper into the vision; my heartbeat would be very slow and it would feel like my whole body had that faint feeling of needles and pins, like asleep.

Think acupuncture without the needles and hypnosis without closing your eyes. Some people think it’s a little corny to tap your face and repeat words, but they magically find their doughnut cravings disappear and more powerful effects that last. In this class, we are tapping to train our ability to self-generate positive emotions.

I’ve meditated on ‘nothingness’ (no thoughts focused on with my consciousness) a few times for an entire night, staying conscious while I slept the whole time. I felt as though I were meditating for the entire night (my consciousness never dropped off but my body did 100% fall asleep), but it was always random whether it happened or not. I could go in more depth if you’d like, but it’s not important to my point.

For the “formal practice” time, sit on a cushion on the floor, or on a chair, with straight and unsupported back. Pay close attention to the movement of your breath. When you breath in, be aware that you are breathing in, and how it feels. When you breath out, be aware you are breathing out. Do like this for the length of your meditation practice, constantly redirecting the attention to the breath. Or you can move on to be paying attention to the sensations, thoughts and feelings that arise.

Patients suffering from post-traumatic stress problems who learned the TM technique showed significant reduction in depression after four months, in contrast to others who were randomly assigned to receive psychotherapy. Reference: Journal of Counseling and Development 64:212–215, 1985.

Galen, I’m so happy you found this article beneficial even as an experienced meditator. I find it’s always good to refresh our practice every now and then, because there will be some things we forget as you suggest.

Meditation is a 15,000 year old practice. Modern research finds alpha can be quickly and easily stimulated using AlphaStim or similar systems. Binaural beats can stimulate theta and delta. These can be used while watching TV or reading, etc.

Emptiness meditation (Zuowang)— to sit quietly and empty oneself of all mental images (thoughts, feelings, and so on), to “forget about everything”, in order to experience inner quiet and emptiness. In this state, vital force and “spirit” is collected and replenished. This is similar to the Confucius discipline of “heart-mind fasting”, and it is regarded as “the natural way”. One simply allows all thoughts and sensations arise and fall by themselves, without engaging with or “following” any of them. If this is found to be too hard and “uninteresting”, the student is instructed with other types of meditation, such as visualization and Qigong

Last but not least, deep meditation can give you access to a part of you that feels limitless. These are the deeper currents that Deepak refers to above. Spending time resting in this space is positive beyond measure and gives you confidence in the inherent goodness of life.

The progressive scanning up the body after feeling a connection with the Earth is pretty sweet. It also creates a physical relaxation similar to that felt in a body scan. If you seek to gain clarity with all areas of life, this guided meditation is powerful.
