Many of us find excuses to avoid cultivating the mind. There is the familiar objection, “I don’t have enough concentration to meditate.” But strong concentration, as we said, is not a requirement for insight meditation.

First, note your intention as “intending to move.” Next, start moving the body slowly, breaking the motion down into a series of separate actions. Stop completely after each movement. On an average day we set out to accomplish the goals set forth before the sun once again rests past the horizon, but tend to limit ourselves to what seems achievable during the daylight hours. As soon as you’re aware of an emotion during meditation practice, label it with a mental note. For example, if you realize you’re angry, label the emotion “anger, anger,” for one or two moments. I never thought I’d be quoting football coaches, but as football legend Bill Parcell’s points out, “Commitment is about giving your all to every play. It’s about choosing the right path; not the easiest one.”

When we take time to look at life we may be surprised to discover how many “comfort zones” we have created for ourselves.  It could be a job we do not like but are afraid to leave in case we fail at a new venture or perhaps there is a relationship that is actually toxic to us but are afraid of what it would be like to start again, be on our own or try and make new friends.  A comfort zone is not always a warm and fuzzy place, just one that is familiar.  Too often it is more like a jail surrounding us with walls of negativity.

We’ve all undoubtedly experienced situations in which we’ve had a powerful intuitive flash come our way that we’ve acknowledged and then promptly ignored, only to have it come back later to bite us you know where. That may be a little inconvenient or bothersome when the stakes are low, but when they’re high, it can mean the difference between life and death, as illustrated in the new Roman Polanski thriller, “The Ghost Writer.”

It’s important to write down your responses; writing keeps you focused and on track. Understand that it’s okay if you don’t have the answers right away. But ask these questions regularly and your brain will go to work on the answers for you. Analyze them based on what you truly want from within.

The only difference is that doing what I’ve outlined above feels FULFILLING, and what you’re doing now doesn’t.

I come from a religious background. I was raised in a conservative Protestant denomination with lots of rules and strict expectations on behavior during service (no musical instruments, no hand-clapping, be very quiet during the sermon, etc.). When I was about 15, my parents moved us to the opposite end of the spectrum, in terms of types of church service, to what some might call a mystical Protestant sect, known collectively as the “Pentecostals”. They used lots of instruments (drums, trumpets, electric guitars) in their services. They clapped their hands during songs. They shouted “Amen!” at the preacher. That was a big shock given our past experiences in church, but it was also the first time I had ever really felt The Presence. The Pentecostals called that presence the Holy Spirit, and the effect it had on the people was called the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. A reference to this experience can be found in the Book of Acts, as I am sure you know.

Many well-intended practitioners of Eastern and Western medicine have experienced this drain.   • In sports football players go for long BOMBS, hockey has an ATTACK zone and a player in control of a soccer ball is known at the ATTACKER.  Sportscasters and coaches twist games into combat, pitting teams against each other in a FIGHT to the DEATH.  Even a leisurely afternoon game of golf has its roots well buried in battle terms.  CADDIE for example is short for cadet, meaning someone training for military duty and FORE was a term used as a warning for incoming fire on the front lines long before it became popular on the links.

    What do discipline and our health have to do with one another? I think that we can all agree that discipline plays a big role in our health and actually in many other areas of our life.

    I was humbled by her choice to recognize the blessings in her life and decided that, “I’m blessed,” will become my official and heartfelt response from this point forward.  No matter how bleak the day may look.  How empty my bank account may be or how quickly my deadlines are approaching, if I’m breathing, and I’m able to wait patiently (or even impatiently) for Bella to, ‘do her business,’ I will remember my new found friend and answer with a sincere and heartfelt smile . .  “I’m blessed.”
